Hi Brian, Could I also take you up on that offer. My mother and I are travelling to England in April and making Margate our first point of call. We will be there Tuesday April 21 leaving again on Friday April 24 to go to my aunts place. We have already corresponded with Pat Cole (I think - she's from the historical society - my mother has the correspondence) and have received a letter, a photo and an invitation to visit from the current owners of Northwood Farmhouse where our ancestor Jeremiah Sackett lived for some time. We are hoping to visit cemeteries at St Peters, St Lawrence(where my mother went to boarding school), St John and Birchington to find our predecessors. Have booked accommodation at the Florence Court Hotel. Any help with suggestions or how best to locate the specific gravestones we are looking for would be most helpful. Hi Brian and all I'd be pleased to help out where I can and also to tag along to your visits as I missed out on the reunion. My brother and daughter live in Kent so no problem for me to be on hand and am only 2.5 hours drive away. Hi, I had a senior moment. I guess I should have included a Link to the Virginia, West Virginia Project. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~deschart/ Kathy James

Sally, while we wouldn't expect to find much documentation on the Chief's side of things, we do have accounts recorded in various Town Histories regarding abductions and about this one in particular. If I recall correctly, this abducted daughter did return but was unable or unwilling to stay with her white family. This would at least tend to give some credibility to the stories. I wish I had time to read them in more depth right now, but the number of irons in the fire sort of prevents it! Now, I do not wish to rain on everyone's picnic...but (gulp that word sticks in the craw) I would like to play devil's advocate for a moment. I am wondering how much of the data on Chief Sackett comes from "hard" sources (tax roles, census, other counts, wills, court cases, treaties, land purchases) and how much is anecdotal. I have not gone back through and noted where the bulk of the evidence lies. My first reaction, when I hear folks talk about indian blood they have, is to take a skeptical stance. I have my reasons for this...the main reason is that the information is often anecdotal, passed down from generation to generation. I have heard it from both sides of my family tree, dad and mom's side, but have yet to find proof of a single drop of indian blood in my tree! Indeed, I have not found anyone who claims to have indian blood that I have done personal research for, for whom records have surfaced that show this to be the case. I am reminded of an article I read on the subject...about a family who told their paid genealogist that they were descended from Pocahontas. Turned out that family histories got crossed and garbled someplace along the lines and the "Pocahontas" from which the family had come forth was not the indian of lore, but rather the county by that name in what is now West Virginia! So I am wondering...what do we know from hard record about Chief Sackett, what is from family or local lore, and what can we know about him and with what degree of certainty?
