I have updated The Sackett Family Association website www.sackettfamily.info with the following additions: * Newsletter April 2009 * Sackett's Hill article & gallery * Blog I have been considering for a while adding a blog to the website and have finally taken the plunge. I hope maintaining it won't become too burdensome such that I regret ever starting it! Anyway, for starters, there's a piece about the splendid set of photos of Sackett's Hill House supplied by Nick Smyth, and a mention of the Committee elections. Regards, Chris Sackett TSFA Webmaster
I enjoyed seeing the Sackett's Hill article and gallery of pictures. Great job!! Grace in MN (my husband descends from a Sackett.
Along with Chris' new Blog, I too have reached out to a new mode of technology for the SACKETT family. My family members encouraged me to join Facebook recently. For years I have been hesitant to join these types of social networking sites such as My Space or Facebook due to security issues. Since I joined however, I have discovered that Facebook has a growing number of genealogy-related groups. I also found that you can make your account and groups as secure as you desire. A copy of the Internet Genealogy magazine that I received yesterday has an article entitled "Network Research: Facebook for Genealogists" encouraging the use of Facebook in genealogy research. I decided to create a group on Facebook. For the branches of the SACKETT family who have not connected to Thomas The Elder's family, we could feel a little left out with all the discussions on the SACKETT Mailing List about the English branch. I decided to create a Facebook group for us called SACKETT Road Blocks. This could include of course my John Sackett of New Haven, CT, the Vermont Sackett's, the Wisconsin Sackett's and all unidentified SACKETT descendants everywhere. However, all branches are invited to join. It will be interesting to see where discussions lead, if they lead anywhere. For those who already have a Facebook account, you are most welcomed to join me. Search for "Groups" and then "SACKETT Road Blocks". It's just me right now and I'd love to have folks join me! It is set so that all requests go through me first to avoid jokers. Just click on "Request to join the group". You can also try going directly to the group's web site at: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=68399934205&ref=ts For those who do not yet have a Facebook account, go to www.facebook.com and create a new account and then follow the directions above to join our group. I have searched many newspapers for birth announcements and found very little. I have tried to find a marriage between any Sackett and Williams and found a few but no ties yet. I feel like I may even need to search Cananadian records with more viger. I would love to find the connection, and as many times as my gr-grandmother, changed the name she was using, i may have to look for name changes in the records (i.e. Leah M Roe, May Roe, Mae Sackett, Leah M Sackett)such as Lucy or Linda to find more threads to this puzzle. Like I stated there may have been a connection to someone in Canada, like a marriage that took one of the daughters over the boarder and than back across home to grandma in later years. It is believed in our family, that Leah stated Lucian may of been born out of wed lock. At the time of his birth the Civil War was ending and many people may of lost their lives from that, it is a bit of a stretch, but not impossible. I have searched war records as well for many Sackett's. I fear that Lucian didn't know much about his father, at one point the fact that his father was born in France comes up and is different and listed as New York (which could of been a typo). His mother was stated to of been born in New York which fits both of the girls Almeda and Caroline. If you have anything else, please pass it along. Or if you have any interesting places to search, that would be great as well. Thank you so much, Lyla Marie Sackett Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Arabella lives in England and is married to a Sackett. They have a copy of a letter written in 1957 by a Samuel Jefferson Sackett of Chicago, IL which tells of of a fund drive in America to help restore St. Mary's Church in Sandwich. The letter states: "Specifically, a Sackett daughter, Lucinda Sackett Williams of East St. Louis, Illinois, some years ago established contact with some of the English Sacketts. The interest aroused thereby led her, with her husband, to take a trip to the ancient stronghold of the Sackett family in England, as a result to which she became imbued with the idea that we in this country, could render some assistance in the project described in the accompanying article, which was prepared by her. It has to do with the preservation of St. Mary's Church in Sandwich." >From this it would appear that Lucinda Sackett Williams was living in the mid-1900s which would exclude her from being the same as Lucinda Williams (b. c.1816), grandmother of Lucian A. Sackett. I, like you, am puzzled as to why Lucian (b. 1866) does not show up in the 1870 census. From the 1870 census, it appears that Lucinda Williams was a widow and her daughter Almeda/Ameda was still single and Lucian was not in her household at that time. The only other daughter that we have from the 1850 census is Caroline Williams, age 2. I don't have access to the 1860 census and, therefore, don't know if there were other daughters in the Williams household at that time. If there was not another daughter it would appear that; for Lucian to be a grandson of Lucinda, Caroline would likely to have been his mother.
