Daniel M. Devault <ddevault@iswt.com> posted to RUST-L 29 Apr 98: "Martha Garner, wife of Samuel Rust, was the tenth child of John Garner and his wife Susannah Keene. This from the book GARNER-KEENE FAMILIES OF NORTHERN NECK, VIRGINIA by Ruth Ritchie and Sudie Rucker Wood, Charlottesville, VA., 1952." My Interlibrary Loan came through this morning, and I found: Ruth Ritchie and Sudie Rucker Wood, _Garner-Keene Families of Northern Neck, Virginia_ (Charlottesville, VA, 1952), p. 186: "Martha^2 Garner, daughter of John^1 and Susanna (Keene) Garner, was given a thumb ring in her father's will and a large silk handkerchief and trunk in the will of her brother Benjamin [1718]." Benjamin's will simply calls her "sister Martha", and father John also gives only her first name. What is the evidence that Martha GARNER is the widow of George BUTLER whom Samuel RUST married (Ellsworth M. Rust)? Samuel and Martha were married before 1695, as at least two of their children were of age by the time Sam wrote his will in 1715. So it would be normal for Benjamin and John GARNER to call their sister and daughter Martha Rust in their wills. I have checked the index entries for Samuel RUST; none of them mentions a marriage to Martha GARNER. There are no entries for George BUTLER. Before we're too quick to claim the GARNERs as kin, we need some proof that Sam RUST's wife was the daughter of John GARNER. Does anyone have some? Kathleen Much kathleen@casbs.stanford.edu
