General: Vincent Rust first appeared in Tax rolls of Granville County, N.C. in 1800, with 618 A., 1 poll and 3 blacks in Fort Creek district. He apeared in the Granville Conty census of 1800, with 1 daughter under 10. On 3 Nov. 1807, Vincent rust sold land in Granville County (formerly purchased by John Rust) and soon moved to Smith County, Tn. with his Bradford in-laws, his brother John rust, Jr. and father John Rust, Sr. In 1820 census of Smith County, Tn., Vincent had 12 slaves, 2 in Agriculture, 1 in commerce and 8 in manufacturing. Probably Carriage Making, as they were in that trade in N.C. By 1815 Vincent rust was involved in numerous Court cases in Smith County, Tn., evidently with his debtors. By 1819, the inventory of his deceased father John Rust, Sr. (having returned to N.C.) consisted solely of 1 note for $5,000.00 on Vincent Rust and Thomas Smith, declared "doubtful.
