Hello everyone, I am delighted to become a member of the Rust list. This is a fairly recent discovery for me, as I have been researching various family connections for the hast forty years or so. I am posting what I have on the family thus far so that all of you who are more familiar with the lineage can "rake me over" for all of my mistakes and ill-placed persons. I am a descendant of Anne Rust who married George Harrison of Westmoreland County, Virginia, through their son, Benjamin Harrison, of Brunswick County, VA and Granville County, North Carolina. I am interested in the Vincent Cox tie with the family; the given name Vincent comes down through my line, and I am just curious if there were some connection to the Vincent(Vinson) family. William Rust Birth Date: Circa 1634 Birth Place: Suffolk County, England Notes: Was born about 1634 probably in Suffolk County, England; settled in the Yeocomico, Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia. His arrival in the Coloney of Virginia appears to have been about 1650, probably somewhat earlier. His first appearance upon official records is when he was witness to a will in 1654. The date of his death is uncertain. William appears to have been well educated for the time, for unlike many of his neighbors and intimates, he always signed documents with hsi signature, never by mark. All but the opening paragraph of his will, proven in the county of his residence, November 29, 1699, is missing. This paragraph of his will and the record of its proof are quoted below: "In the Name of God Amen I William Rust of Youcomoco in the parish of Cople in the County of Westmoreland daily finding myself to decline in my health, yet praise by god of Perfect sound mind and memory, observing the fraelty & uncertainty of Life doe make this my last will and Testament:" The court record reads: "The last Will & Testament of Wm Rust was this day produced in Court AndJno Tanner & Simon Robins Severally deposed that they See the said Wm Rust Signe Seal and declare the same tyme to the best of their Judmts. A probate was grtd Samll & George Rust Executors therein named And the Will ordered to be Recorded." William married first prior to May 17, 1662, Ann Metcalf, or Medcalfe, the name appears to have been spelled both ways, who died prior to May 1697, and who was without doubt the mother of all his children. William Medcalfe, father of Ann, lived at Cherry Point Neck, formed by the confluence of the Yeocomico River with the Potomac, which is in Westmoreland. He married second, after May 1697, Mrs. Matilda Earle, widow of Samuel Earle, Sr. After William's death Matilda married before July 26, 1705, John Bennett. William Rust, Sr. June 28, 1699, wa security for George Eskridge, administrator of Margaret Rust, widow of William Rust, Jr. Spouse: Ann Medcalfe Death Date: Before May 1797 Spouse Father: William Medcalfe Spouse Notes: Ann was the daughter of William Medcalfe. Children: John William Samuel George Other spouses: Matilda -?- (2) 1.1 John Rust Notes: Appears to have died without issue. His father, as his guardian, brought suit, February 23 1686-7 against William Butler, executor of the estate of John Ward, whose widow, Joanna, Butler had married. The nature of the suit is not clear from available records. Many years later, Captain Peter Rust, nephew of John, presented for record a patent for land in Northumberland County, which had been issued to John Ward in 1663. These patents passed by transfer from hand to hand in that period in much the same manner as does currency in the present. (2) 1.2 William Rust Notes: Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia; was doubless of age when on June 29, 1696, he was named for grand jury, and not appearing for such services was fined. He was named constable in the precinct of Yeocomico, Cople Parish, Northumberland County, in January 1694. Earlier, March 25, 1690-1, Samuel Bonum acknowledged sale of land to William Rust, Jr. and wife, and on December 16, 1691, William Butler and wife, Joanna, formerly the widow of John Ward, conveyed to William Rust and wife Margaret, make a lease and release to William Butler. Margaret was the daughter of Margaret Bonum. Spouse: Margaret Bonum? His will, August 16, 1715, was proven March 26, 1718. He married Martha, whose will November 3, 1726, was proven February 25, 1729-30 Samuel became an extensive land holder, owning at the time of his death some 1700 acres. Samuel was named as appraiser of the estates of Vincent Cox(1713) and George Harrison(1713), and many others. She left her sons Samuel and George land bought of William Eskridge; son Benjamin the other part of the land bought of Eskridge; and her granddaughter, Anne Harrison. (Did not specify which son's daughter) Her executors were her sons George, Matthew and James; wits: William Hartley, Edward Goldsby and Jane Goldsby.
