Thanks for the apt reminder about using the new, improved server to "catch up" on items missed or forgotten from the list. I did as you suggested. Works wonderfully!! Its fast!! Shirley jstar@gte.net
Glad to see at least one of us knows how to spell it. I DON'T. I am always adding an extra "p". I'm trying to fill in some blanks & questions about "inlaws' surnames who married a RUST. Do any of you happen to have a Marshall or a Bailey who also married a RUST? Julia, I have continued to find marriages in the lists you sent. Thanks again!! Do I note correctly, that the list ends for the dates @ 1850? Also, I would really appreciate a touch more explanation about the lady who has great information & the ability to clear up some questions left from previous research of Ells. M. RUST? 1. Is there a book or publication? 2. Does she go "all the way" back to William, the immigrant (sp?)? A Rust who came to Tampa to "manage" the local LDS library for a while, & is now back in Salt Lake City; emailed last fall that there was a new book about the Rust line. Would this be the/a book of which you speak/email? (The gentleman is of the New England Rusts) We have been enterchanging computers several times lately. I "apologize" for not catching the details about either the knowledgable lady or a publication. Speaking of being in & out of the list, thanks Kathleen for the Bailey/Lee information. I need these surnames for ladies who married my Rusts up in the Northern Neck...! You are such a thorough researcher, I thought you might have information on those too. Shirley asked: Have you ever found anything about a BAILEY/LEE connection. Weren't you looking into that? Several Bailey women had LEE for a middle name. --- That's a different line altogether. (I think.) On my father's side I have an incredibly intertwined group: Around 1800, 3 LEE siblings (children of Thomas LEE) married 3 BAILEY siblings (children of Thomas BAILEY) and the Baileys' widowed mother married the Lees' elder half-brother. These people all lived in TN and then settled in northern AL (Birmingham area) before it became a state, ca 1820. In the next generation, there were 22 LEE/BAILEY double cousins. Three sets of them married, and six more of them married six ACTON siblings. Subsequently, there were a bunch more cousin marriages. As far as I know, both the LEEs and BAILEYs were of sturdy stock, so the inbreeding had pretty good outcomes. Don't forget, inbreeding can strengthen good genes as well as accentuate bad ones. I've never heard of any physical or mental defects in the LEE/BAILEY/ACTON lines. Some of them were a mite peculiar :), but no more so than my other relatives! The RUSTs were on my mother's side. I'm not sure where in VA the BAILEYs originated, but the LEEs were from Nansemond Co and then went to NC. They are not (as far as anyone knows) connected to the Northern Neck LEEs descended from Richard LEE or to the RUSTs. If anybody can tie them together, I'd like to know about it. Kathleen Much kathleen@casbs.stanford.edu
Thrs. Morn. Re: Your reference to cousin marriages: Kathleen, I was really feeling "relaxed" at the cousin marriages in my own lines of RUST. They all seemed at least 3 or 4 genera- tions and/or 3 or 4 lines apart. But if my latest hunch proves correct, I am facing first counsins marrying. To me, its amazing there could be romantic feelings. I always considered my own cousins more like brothers. Have you ever found anything about a BAILEY/LEE connection. Weren't you looking into that? Several Bailey women had LEE for a middle name. Shirley Starks jstar@gte.net
The RUST relatives really went in for cousin marriage. For anyone with COX lines, here's a descent from Hannah COX Damourvell's father Vincent COX (Hannah's daughter married Jeremiah RUST). You'll see lots of familiar names, some multiple times. The number after a person's name is my database i.d. number. An asterisk means the person was married more than once. I hope this helps somebody wrestling with all the similar names. It has taken me a long time to get the connections straight. I have information on many of these people, so please ask if you'd like more (be sure to give me the i.d. so I'll find the right person). 1 Vincent COX, 3943 b. bef 1664 d. 1698, Westmoreland Co, VA 1.1 Charnock COX, 3551 b. bef 1698 d. 1751, Westmoreland Co, VA & Mary PRESLEY, 3552 1.1.1a Charnock COX Jr.*, 3550 d. 1744, Westmoreland Co, VA & Elizabeth BERRYMAN, 3447 b. abt 1690, Westmoreland Co, VA d. abt 1734, Westmoreland Co, VA m. bef Mar 1726 1.1.1a.1 Presley COX Jr., 3820 b. bef 1734, Westmoreland Co, VA 1.1.1a.2 Vincent COX, 3553 b. bef 1734, Westmoreland Co, VA 1.1.1a.3 Charnock COX, 4200 b. 1722-1743 1.1.1a.4 John COX, 4201 b. 1722-1743 d. aft 1753 1.1.1b Charnock COX Jr.*, 3550 d. 1744, Westmoreland Co, VA & Mary ---, 3819 d. aft 1751 1.1.2 Elizabeth COX, 3715 & Samuel RUST, 3714 b. bef 1731, Westmoreland Co, VA d. 1798/1799, Westmoreland Co, VA m. 14 Jan 1741, Northumberland Co, VA 1.1.2.1 Peter RUST, 3755 b. 1745, VA d. 1781/1782, Westmoreland Co, VA & Rebecca ESKRIDGE, 3754 b. bef 1764 d. 1802, VA m. 1764, VA 1.1.2.2 Molly RUST, 4213 b. bef 1751 1.1.2.3 Elizabeth RUST, 4214 b. bef 1751 1.1.2.4 Jeremiah RUST, 3757 d. bef 30 Mar 1791 & Elizabeth ATTWELL, 4334 d. abt 1801 m. bef 29 Apr 1783 1.1.3 George COX, 4216 b. bef 1751 1.1.4 William COX, 4217 b. bef 1751 1.1.5 Presley COX, 4273 b. bef 1723 d. 1766, Westmoreland Co, VA & Margaret FLEETE, 2332 d. aft 1723 m. 17 Oct 1723, Lancaster Co, VA 1.1.5.1 Fleet COX, 4272 b. aft 1723 d. 1791, Westmoreland Co, VA 1.1.5.2 William COX, 4274 b. aft 1723 1.1.5.3 Peter Presley COX, 4333 b. aft 1723 d. SSAntient@aol.com posted to VA-ROOTS: Fairfax Co. Deed dtd 17/18 Oct 1763 bet Christopher Maccabees JACKSON of Prince William Co. and Benjamin MIDDLETON of Westmoreland Co. of one part and Samuel Demovil, late of Westmoreland Co., deceased, by his Last Will and Testament in writing bearing date the 12th April 1723, devised to his Dau, Magdalene RUST and to his Dau. Elizabeth HARRISON, And whereas Magdalene Rust afterwards intermarried with Christopher Dominic JACKSON, late of Westmoreland Co., deced., who gave his Son Christopher Macabees JACKSON, party to these presents 100 acs,. also Elizabeth HARRISON intermarried with Benjamin MIDDLETON, late of Westmoreland Co. who had issue BENJAMIN MIDDLETON, party these presents, her Eldest Son --- Thanks very much to Sam for posting original documents. I was working on these collateral lines a while ago and ran into problems with the multiple Hannahs, Samuels, Magdalenes, Elizabeths, and Benjamin MIDDLETONs (who get easily confused with the Benedict MIDDLETONs, who were relatives). Here is the will evidence: William A. Crozier, ed., _Westmoreland County Wills_ (Virginia County Record Publications, n.s. 1, 1913), p. 30, citing Will Book 7: "DAMAVORELL, SAMUEL, 12 April 1723; 8 Aug. 1723. Son Samuel; dau. Magdalene Rust; dau. Elizabeth Harrison; wife Hannah." P. 48, citing Will Book 10: "DEMOVEL, HANNAH, 8 Sept. 1744; 25 Sept. 1744. To Peter son of George Lamkin decd.; my granddaughters Hannah Demovel, Mary Middleton, and Hannah Armistead; Sarah dau. of John Armistead; my grandchildren Jane More, Hannah Brown, Magdalen Jackson, Hannah Hartley, James Lamkin, Samuel Lamkin, and Magdalen Claughton; my dau. Elizabeth Middleton; son in law Benj. Middleton." This is Hannah COX, the widow of George LAMKIN (d. 1691) and Samuel DEMOURVELL (d. 1723). P. 51, citing Will Book 11: "JACKSON, CHRISTOPHER DOMINICK, 1 July 1749; 31 Oct. 1749. Wife Magdalene and my three sons when they are 21." Magdalene DEMOURVELL Jackson was the daughter of Hannah who d. 1744. P. 67, citing Will Book 14: "JACKSON, MAGDALENE, 11 Aug. 1766; 24 Nov. 1767. My beloved son Samuel [Rust]; son Julius [Jackson]; son Thaddeus [Jackson]; son Christopher [Jackson]; my decd. husband Christopher D. Jackson." Son Christopher is clearly the Christopher Maccabeus JACKSON of the Fairfax Co. deed. Hannah COX and Samuel DAMOURVELL had a son Samuel, daughter Magdalene, and daughter Elizabeth. Presumably Samuel II was the father of "granddaughter Hannah Demovel"; Elizabeth was the mother of Mary MIDDLETON (unless Mary married a MIDDLETON); and Magdalene was the mother of Magdalen JACKSON (? I haven't found her elsewhere. Possibly she was the wife of a JACKSON). By her first husband, George LAMKIN, Hannah COX had George, James, and John. John LAMKIN's daughter Jane married a MORE (John or Samuel) and appears in Hannah's will. Evidently some of the other granddaughters had married BROWN, HARTLEY, and CLAUGHTON. But who are the ARMISTEADs? And why are none of Magdalene DAMOURVELL's five children by Jeremiah RUST (d. 1731) mentioned in her mother's will? Possibly one was: granddaughter Hannah RUST could be Hannah Armistead, Hannah Brown, or Hannah Hartley, all named. But not Samuel, William, Jeremiah, or Martha. Ellsworth M. Thanks, Shirley, for the relevant quotes on Jane Middleton Rust. My Reunion file up and quit on me this weekend and has gone to the spa (LeisterPro) for repairs, so I can't trace out the relationships yet. On first glance, though, I don't find it terribly unusual for a woman in the 18th c to marry at 15 and have 12 or 14 children and still live to be 81. I have other known cases of women with a dozen or more kids starting in their mid-teens. If Jane had her first child at 18 and last at 35+, she still had 10 years or so of potential childbearing. Guess she finally figured out what was causing those births and stopped! The one thing I remember (from a partial printout I did some time ago) is that Jane MIDDLETON wife of John CRABB outlived her husband, "whose will made in 1775 was proven in 1779." (EMR) That means she could not have been a widow married to Benedict RUST in 1766. So the best answer is that EMR made an error in proofreading and Benedict's wife was Jane MIDDLETON Crabb's daughter Jane Middleton CRABB. It's quite normal that John CRABB would call his married daughter Jane Middleton Rust, omitting her maiden name. I caught what I suspect is another error in EMR from your quote (p. 323). He says Mary MIDDLETON, dau. of Benedict MIDDLETON and Elizabeth ROGERS, married George RUST-323. Now that's possible, but on p. 421 he says Mary (George's wife) was the daughter of Robert and Mary MIDDLETON. I think Benedict's daughter may be the Mary MIDDLETON of William A. Crozier, ed., _Westmoreland County Wills_ (Virginia County Record Publications, n.s. 1, 1913), p. 64, citing Will Book 14: "MIDDLETON, MARY, 6 Mch. 1755; 27 Sept. 1763. To William and Thomas the sons of Thomas Middleton decd; Mary Brown dau. of my brother Benjamin Middleton; Leazure widow of Thomas Middleton decd. extx." Crozier often mistakes Benedict for Benjamin. Of course, there were several Benjamin MIDDLETONs, so it's possible that Mary really did have a brother Benjamin, in which case she could have been the daughter of Benedict's brother John. John's sons were John, Robert, Thomas, and Benjamin. It is quite likely that Mary would leave property to her nephews and niece. (Just to confuse things, John's son John II married the sister of his uncle Benedict's wife.) I don't have birthdates for George (son of Matthew RUST and Winifred COX) and Mary, but George's parents were born before 1700 and Robert MIDDLETON was born probably around 1700, so they were the same generation. Mary MIDDLETON wife of George RUST was more likely the granddaughter of Benedict MIDDLETON and Elizabeth ROGERS. Kathleen Much kathleen@casbs.stanford.edu

Kathleen, Re: paragraph on pg. 442 of RUST OF VA. by EMR. I have another Crabb researcher in on the search for who Jane Middleton was. She has other info. on this line. The way that paragraph is written..sounds like she may have been a Crabb. TWILIGHT ZONE. Maybe we can find out more from her...and/or someone out there. Shirley jstar@gte.net
Fri. Eve. 5-1-98 Kathleen, I did not copy p. 423. (I don't have the book.) You were sharp to catch it. But I don't think she had time for two relationships. Skip to the bottom of this. Pg. 323: Its plain to see there is a daughter whose name he doesn't know. "Among the children of Benedict Middleton and wife, Elizabbeth (Rogers) were Robert Middleton, gent. surveyor of highways (1736), vestryman Cople Parish, 1755, will proven November 30, 1773, married Mary. Their daughter Mary, became the wife of 323-George Rust. A grandson, John Crabb, son of daughter (?) and John Crabb, married 435-Elizabeth Rust, while their daughter, Jane appears from the best available information, to have married 328-Benedict Rust, which see." (Sentence just quits) Pg. 97 states: "The will of John Crabb, 1775, names 'daughter, Jane Middleton Rust", but her exact relationship, whether daughter, or step- daughter, is undertermined." She has to have been a SUPERWOMAN!!! ALL things to all men!! (Couldn't resist the joke!) Jane Middleton, b. 26 Feb. 1751, married Benedict Rust in 1766. She's 15!!! Then she had a child at 18, John Rust (460) in February,1769. Pregnant at 17 ..birth at 18. Had to be a mighty busy girl. She had 12 RUST children. (The last was Jeremiah Rust (471) b.after Jane Middleton Rust,b.1786.) pgs. 94 thru 98. Benedict died 1829. That makes her 78 years old..unless she got a divorce. She died in 1832. WHERE IS THAT LADY WHOSE BOOK CLEARED UP ALL ELLS. M. RUST'S MISTAKES? Better still...WHERE IS THE BOOK? Possibilities?: There were 2 Jane Middletons & in the writing, he erred & didn't catch it on edit. (Occasionally a family will use a name twice or more. Martha Jane Whatsit..called Jane cause of another Martha. Jane Elizabeth Whatsit...recordings used first name, Jane; but she goes by Elizabeth.) There was a divorce after 12 children...Maybe I'd want out too.(Grin). Not too likely here, I'd think. Maybe there is a wrong date..in marriage to Benedict. That would still have the woman having 14 or more children. (And I thought the old woman in the shoe was a myth!) Perhaps some of the children in the will are sons-in-law. They are often referred to as "sons". Do you have a list of her Rust children? I hope in my sleepiness last night, I didn't figure something studid..!! You'll figure it out if anyone can. Shirley quotes EMR as saying that Benedict RUST m. Jane MIDDLETON. Ellsworth M. Rust, _Rust of Virginia_ (Washington, 1940), p. 94: "328-Benedict Rust-207 was born Westmoreland County, Virginia, October 25, 1743, died September 18, 1829, Frederick County, Virginia; married March 24, 1766, Jane (?) Middleton, born February 26, 1751, died September 3, 1832, daughter Robert Middleton." But see also p. 423: "(?)Jane Middleton Crabb, m. (probably) 328-Benedict Rust, youngest son of 207-Matthew Rust." And p. 442: "Jane Middleton [sister of Robert, Benedict, and William], living in 1780, m. John Crabb, whose will made in 1775 was proven in 1779. Their children were: "Elizabeth Rogers Crabb, m. probably Robert Middleton, stepson of 207-Matthew Rust. [Frances GARLAND Middleton, widow, married Matthew RUST. She had two children by MIDDLETON, Robert and Rachel] "John Crabb, m. 435-Elizabeth Rust, dau. of 317-Samuel Rust, and g-dau. of 206-Jeremiah Rust. "Mary Crabb, m. --- Gennett. "Benedict Crabb. "(?)Jane Middleton Crabb, m. (probably) 328-Benedict Rust, youngest son of 207-Matthew Rust. "Lettice Crabb. "William Middleton Crabb." The chronology works better if the bride is Jane Middleton CRABB instead of her mother Jane MIDDLETON Crabb. Has anybody got any further clues to solve this problem? Frances GARLAND Middleton Rust wrote her will 1759. William A. Crozier, ed., _Westmoreland County Wills_ (Virginia County Record Publications, n.s. 1, 1913), p. 61, citing Will Book 14: "RUST, FRANCES, 23 July 1759; 30 June 1761. Son Robert Middleton; dau. Rachel Cox; son Benjamin [sic; s/b Benedict] Rust; daughters Frances Shearman and Molly Rust." Which COX did Rachel marry? Kathleen Much kathleen@casbs.stanford.edu
