Hi Fellow Rooters; My name is Patti Waldo Swaim and this is my 1st post as I subscribed only a min. ago. I am kindly requesting for a friend (who does not have NET but wants to start researching his Russian roots) the proper procedures to request birth records in Russia for his deceased ancestors? I am actively researching my WALDO family roots but have not attempted anywhere but in the US, so I am at a loss as to how I can help my friend. Of, course my 1st thought was to check RootsWeb for a mail list for Russia as I am an avid subscriber to rootsweb and I am very happy to find you all! Any advice/websites, etc. you can lend me would be greatly appreciated as I want to help my friend find his Russian roots. I thank you all in advance. Happy trails on the hunt; Patti Waldo Swaim :)

Another useful language translation site you may want to visit is found at http://web.nstar.net/~dwat6911/language.htm where real people and computers do the translating. :) Don
Just found this site...haven't tried it yet but WOW looks promising for identifying what language a word is or for translating words...and a whole lot of other things as well. Looks impressive anyway. Here it is... http://www.itools.com/research-it/research-it.html Check it out! I would like to have info on my great grand dad and mom, Jacob M. Green and Rosalie Dryzba, both born in Russia in 1862 or 1865 and 1873. This is all I have. They did have a child, my grandmom, who was born in CT in 1900. Cordially, James M. My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Looking for information on my surname....
Privet! Has anyone on this list ever used the services of Andrei A. Shumkov, professional genealogist in SPB or any other genealogical for-pay services? I haven't myself so far but would like to know how others are going about conducting their research in Russia these days. Carol Queen, how many people are actually reading this list in Russia and in total? Hi all, I know I just posted GenConnect as a great resource, but I received this message this evening. GenConnect is a great resource, but as with all large information outlets, it needs fine tuning and revamping occasionally. So please read the message below. -----Original Message----- From: Pam Carey Durstock <durp@one.net> To: durp@one.net <durp@one.net> Date: Tuesday, February 23, 1999 5:33 PM Subject: GenConnect will be down GenConnect will be down for possibly a few days while it is worked on. >Please advise your visitors, should they ask. Hi all, Just wanted to let you know that things are beginning to take shape with the Russia GenWeb and GenConnect board. I have re-set the Russia GenConnect board to accept any queries that you want to post. The url is http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Russia/General This is a good place to make a connection in your research. I will be working on a Russia GenWeb site. This will take a little while to get set up, since it involves creating a website. I have put an Eastern Europe page on my homepage, this is mostly links to other sites of interest, and includes a page of surnames researched in the area, and their websites. The url for my homepage is shown below. Take advantage of the query board, it is a great resource. I am the regional coordinator for EastEuropeGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~autwgw/seegw.htm If anybody is interested in hosting Russia for the WorldGenWeb project, please contact me via direct e-mail: mailto:cwardell@aon.at If you: - Enjoy genealogy - Speak English and at least some Russian - Know Russia and its history well - Know how to build Web pages (HTML) and how to use FTP (note: you do not need your own server). - Want to help as a volunteer in the exciting WorldGenWeb project then this might be an interesting opportunity. Your main tasks will be to: - Build and maintain GenWeb page(s) for Russia. You are free to use your creativity; the pages merely have to provide links back to the WorldGenWeb (with the logo) and the EastEuropeGenWeb. - Help answer queries specific to genealogical research in Russia. Hello Everyone, My grandmother was born on May 6, 1868 in a part of Poland that was Russian. She had a Russian father and a German mother and 9 siblings (all of whom I know nothing about). My grandmother, Vera married Friedrich Alwill Reinmann and came to New York in 1903. I have been unable to make any connection with this family name (which was spelled Ivalampov by my father in some scribbled notes. Does anyone recognize this name or some variant of it? Vera died in Summit, NJ in May of 1953. She never spoke English during her lifetime,so there wasn't a lot of communication with us kids since we only spoke English growing up. Any help with the family name greatly appreciated. Fred Reinman.
Researching the surnames ZJUKOVSKIJ-ZUKAUSKAS-ZUKOWSKI, also GRABOWSKI and SENAVAITIS-SENAWAITIS. Would anyone have any information whether any of these families were from the untitled or titled nobility from Moscow, Russia, or Mogilev, Byelorussia. Also are there any genealogist that aren't to expensive and would you recommend them? Thanks, Pat
I would like to have a clue as to finding some of my Russian line. They were born in Russia, Jacob M. Greene abt. 1862 to 1865 and a Rosalie Drisba might be close, she was in 1873. They had my grand mom, Anna Marie, on May 18, 1900 in Norwich, CT. So they must have moved to United State in 1880's. If you can help, please tell me, thanks, James Mitchell BURTON. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Is anyone researching the Balarka (not certain of this spelling) in Wolyn, Russia for the time period early 1900s? This is the last residence for my grandparents, surname HILLERT. Eduard left in 1911; grandma IDA stayed until 1913. They had first daughter Natalie, age 3 when they left. Eduard traveled on Cassel with a Teresa FIRCHAU and her young son Frederick Wilhelm. Came to Saginaw, Michigan. Susan Kretchman kret@ismi.net
Hi all, I promised to try to put together a few webpages with Russian information. I worked all day on it, I made a page of resources and a page of researchers. However, at this time, I've included all of Eastern Europe. At one time or another, the borders switched back and forth, and alot of the history of one country affects the other. Anyway, I've done as much work on the two pages today as I could. I am still tracking down resources and will add them as they become available. If any of you know of a good website, or resource please let all of us know. Also, if you currently have webpages the include an Eastern European surname and would like a link from my page, send me an email. Just be sure to tell me which country it goes with. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/6587/Russia.html Here is the url to my Russian page. Carol
