I recently uploaded a site of Freebies for Genealogists http://freebies.genealogy.org which, as well as specific genealogy programs, features programs that have helped us to use our computer more efficiently. Including ones to speed up the PC, get faster web access and search 10 search engines at once. The number of visitors and positive feedback has encouraged me to develop the site. The latest uploaded links include: NETMIND You can either receive notification of any amendments to the web pages you register, or have the amended pages sent to you automatically. Saves hours on line and keeps you totally up to date. GEDCOM VIEWER Gedcom Viewer opens a Gedcom format file, exported from your Genealogy program, and displays the full family tree - all on a single screen, even for hundreds of people. You can display Name, Birthdate, etc., find individuals, calculate and show inbreeding levels, zoom, etc. All can be downloaded totally free of charge and used without restriction. John Oyston
What kind of given name is Palagai? Anyone familiar with it? I have searched the web and found some Indian sites using the word Palagai. And one other perhaps in Hungarian. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys, Becky -- Volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm mailto:btgool@swbell.net
Before I quite geneology all together...would someone help me to decipher this $7.00 little scrap of paper I got in the mail from the SS Administration? I can read the hand writing just fine. It's the type under the blanks I can't make out. Under his full name on the top line is his home address on line 2. It is line 3 I can't read. It has someone's name written in (Grant Kennedy and below that Patty Grant) and then next to that Anchor Line Freight House. I am guessing he worked at Anchor Line Freight House but what is that name Patty Grant?? Again, it's the first entry on line 3. Another thing. He has handwritten in his father as Paul GOOL (whoopie) and his mother as Palagai GOOL (scratched out) then typed in GILL. What is that?????? Then what do those two lines say where he has answered no and no. It's lines 7 and 8 from the top. Any ideas? Needless to say I am really disappointed. No birthplace in Russia is listed, just Russia again. Where are you people getting these birthplaces from???? Help!!!! Hi, Does anyone have any information on the following surname - ZJUKOVSKIJ, ZUHOVSKII, ZUKOWSKI, ZUKAUSKAS. Trying to locate possible relatives in Russia, Belarus, Lithuania or Poland. Thanks, Pat
Well, after receiving the obits in the mail just now from the wonderful ladies at the Erie County Library in Erie Pa. I see that the obit is only as good as the info given. Darn it. One thing I did learn however is that the name of who I thought was Mary DZANDREK GOOL is actually ZDRENIK. Is that better? Any connections and/or information about the surname ZDRENIK? Listed as Russian in the 1920 Census and if it means anything her husband was a member of the Russian American Club in Erie. Anything anyone? Thanks so much Becky -- Volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm mailto:btgool@swbell.net

Hi all, I've updated some of my pages. I've added a Poland page, and new material to the East Europe info page. This is always worth checking out, since many Russians are Polish, or Slavik and vice versa. Hello, I am from Norway and have been lurking for a couple of days - but have seen no activity. I am just about to start looking for an ancestor in Russia. I am not sure where, or where norwegian went to at all, only that Arkangelsk area there were a lot of norwegians trading. And they stayed there when the border got closed. Greetings, Marianne in Norway
From: FRANK JENSEN <fr.jensen@c2i.net> To: <DISforum-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 20. mars 1999 22:11 Subject: SV: Russland > Hei. OK, all, not sure I went ahead and posted these two surnames cause up until I saw the 1920 Census, I thought they were Polish. I see now they spoke Russian and were from Russia. At this point, that is all I know. Any thoughts or ideas on surnames GOOL and DZANDREK? I just read where the majority of Russian emmigrants out of Russia in 1917 were nobility fleeing the Revolution....agree? Disagree? What about the years prior? Is there a flow pattern of types of emmigrants? Specifically this is John GOOL and Mary DZANDREK GOOL who at the time of the 1920 Census were 30 years old and 28 respectively. Neither spoke English but could read and write Russian. How unusual does that make them? Tons of questions, I know...sorry! Dear List.... Chernyakhovsk, Russia, used to be Insterburg, Germany. It is south and east of Kaliningrad, Russia, which used to be Königsberg, Germany. Both are near Lithuania. Can anyone help me identify the address for the archives in Chernyakhovsk? Are they divided by church, civil, and military? Do they exist at all? Is there a Russian contact person or organization? Are they cooperative, and reliable? Thanks very much! :) Don
Dear Lists! On my web site at http://web.nstar.net/~dwat6911/index.htm I have a couple of links which might help. Both are near the end of the page. The first link is a virus-checking program which works well if your computer can handle java script and similar. Setting up time for the computer takes several minutes. All you can do is sit and watch. The next time you use it it should be much faster. The second link is to scams, flim-flams, hoaxes, phony virus alerts, and similar. If we all take a moment to check out this link, maybe we can avoid lots of bogus messages, and some hurt feelings. Be kind, one to another. And if a link gives you problems, ask me about it. I'll be happy to help. :) Don Watson List Owner, Hesse-L List Owner, LaRue-L Subscriber, Russia-L
This will be my last Post. Therefore, if anyone is interested in doing any genealogy research with me, please feel free to email me directly. I will no longer subscribe to any mailing lists as I find them stressful and too overwhelming. I apologize list members, but there was a person who asked a very important question in the past few days and I remember someone responding to it. I dont remember who or what list. Could someone who knows please contact this person for me and tell her what the responder originally said about "America's First Families" being a scam. Thank you for your time. Dear Whoever Wrote the Shannon Story, Ignore the narrow-mindedness of some who cannot appreciate the kindheartedness of others. I am sure you meant no more harm than I did when I posted a virus warning to my friends on Rootsweb. My warning may not have been "Genealogical" in nature, but I'd like to think I may have saved a few guileless souls their hard drive. I am forwarding your story to my daughter, who, I am sure, will be very grateful for your thoughtfulness. Thanks again, Mary
Don't feel bad Launie. You got me to thinking. I'm a six foot three, two hundred and fifty pound male with enough muscle to haul it all around but I remember now that I did give out my own address a couple of times last week and now I wish I hadn't. Sometimes we all need a "wakeup." Where in Eastern Europe are your people from? Were you trying to locate them? It's a good list... You should really re'subscribe. Eric Roll bjolla@aol.com
