    1. Re: [RUSSELL] RUSSELLS IN U.S.A. BEFORE 1850
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: azpohlman Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.russell/3177.3465/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a John B. Russell, m: Caroline w/ children Franklin T, John A - born in St. Lawwrence County, NY and then Roland A & Nellie E - born in Wis after 1851. Supposedly, J.B. Russell was the adopted son of my gggrandfather, Wm Jos Pohlman from Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co, NY. From "History of Northern Wisconsin", 1881, The Western Historical Company, pg 1177: "J. B. RUSSELL, proprietor of the Russell House, came to Vinland, Winnebago Co., Wis., in May 1851; was engaged in farming in that town for seventeen years, then he removed to Neenah and engaged in mercantile business, which he continued for three years, and for two years of the time, he also kept a hotel and carried on a livery business. Afterward, for two years, he was farming. In 1875 he built the Russell House, which he has since successfully conducted. The hotel is commodious and elegant, and admirably kept. Mr. Russell is a native of Ogdensburg, N.Y., where he was born Aug. 12, 1822. While a resident of Vinland he was Superintendent of Schools. Since coming to Neenah he has been Alderman, and Superintendent of City Schools." I'm looking for more info on this family's emigration to Wisc. from the Ogdensburg area of NY and their genealogical history prior to 1850, also.
