By 1722 he was resident of King and Queen County. In 1717 he gave a deposition describing the Rappahanok River Settlements. He was employed frequently by Governor Spotswood, who developed iron mine in Spotsylvania County. William was also a founding member of the South West Virginia Trading Company. When Daniel Boone lost his younger brother he stayed at the Russell Lodge for a year in mourning. Son George married Elizabeth Bean and they were the parents of Major William Russell of Russellvill, Franklin County, AL fame; Lydia married William Bean (Elizabeth's brother); John married Henrietta "Dolly Burleson; Jemima married Valentine Sevier; William married Tabitha Adams.
