30 Jul 2002 Rootsweb Russel, Russell and Russells of NC lists: I would like to share some new insights on the 1850 and 1860 census of Madison Co., TN as it relates to the Terry B. or Perry RUSSELL family. This Russell family was from NC according to the 1850 and 1860 census of Madison Co., TN. See the end of this message for the census transcriptions. The mystery to be solved is: Why can't you find Terry or Perry Russell as a head of household in the 1840 census of TN and why can't you find this same family in the 1830 census of TN? The ages of the children in the household and their nativity indicate they were in these states on these dates. Also, why was Terry B. or Perry Russell not listed in the 1870 census of TN, as where the children from this family? The answer to this mystery is the Terry B. or Perry Russell listed in the 1850 and 1860 census of Madison Co., TN as a head of household was incorrectly listed as male in both census records. Terry was a female, not a male. Terry died in 1865, between the 1860 and 1870 census. Her death in 1865 accounts for her not being listed in the 1870 census of either gender. Because Terry Russell was not the head of household in the 1830 and 1840 census, while her husband John B. Russell was still living, this accounts for the fact that you can't find a Terry B. or Perry Russell as a head of household in these census years in the states mentioned above. Russell. John B. This is the only deed that is indexed under the name Terry Russell in Madison Co., TN prior to 1865. This is my transcription of the deed I copied from LDS microfilm # 0,389,643, item 1, which is Deed Book volume 17 of Madison Co., TN, recorded on pps. 444-445: Terry Russell to Ruben Butler deed Reg. Sept 26th 1854 State of Tennep This indenture made and entered into this 17th day of October in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty between Terry Russell and her heirs of the County and State aforesaid of the one part and Ruben Butler of the County and State aforesaid of the other part.
