    1. [RUSSELL-L] Some Russell errors in 1800 NC Census book by Jackson & Teeples

    3. 4 Aug 2002 Russel, Russell and Russell-NC lists: While researching some RUSSELL families in Montgomery Co. NC I, like many others no doubt, consulted the "North Carolina 1800 Census" by R.V. Jackson and G.R. Teeples, a computer generated work from the mid 1970's containing a transcription of the census, alphabetized by surname and first name. When I looked in the Jackson work, there were no Russells of any kind listed in Montgomery Co., NC for 1800. This struck me as a bit strange, so I pulled out the microfilm copy of the original documents in my local library and looked through the roll with Montgomery Co., NC. There WERE Russell families in Montgomery Co., NC in the 1800 census, and some Russell families have been misidentified as families living in Mecklenburg Co., NC in the Jackson publication. The following families were in Montgomery Co., NC, not Mecklenburg: Name Page # (handwritten) Page # (stamped) ------------------- -------------------- ---------------- James Russell 482 480 Moses Russell 483 481 Thomas Russell 484 482 Richard Russell 499 497 Jordon Russell 522 502 The microfilm roll I looked at had both Montgomery (first) and Mecklenburg (second) counties. There was no blank space on the film to clue you when you stopped liking at one county and then started looking at the next. By carefully reading the margins and looking at the last page of the census for Montgomery Co., NC, it is clear where one county stops and the other begins on the microfilm. You just have to look more closely than usual. Jim Sims Fort Worth, TX jimsims@sbcglobal.net
