Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/oZEBAIB/3766.1.1 Message Board Post: Donna - Thanks for your response. You are correct that I have no way of knowing if there is a connection here. Until I find the Father of William, I really don't have a clue who his relatives are.According to family William O. is suppose to be kin to Major William Russell- but I haven't found that conection yet. Its hard for me to believe that with all the names I listed that there insn't someone out there that is a decendent of some of these people. You are correct about State & County lines. I agree that a lot of problems of taking information we get and using that can be like a dog chasing his tail. This is true in AL., MS, TN., Ga.,N.C. that I know of. In researching my line which is from TN.- I found that county lines changed- N.C. & TN. state line changed- so if you were looking for someone in Grainger CO. TN they may be from N.C. I know there are problems in counties in North AL. & MS- and when some counties came into existance Good luck in your search. Bill Roach

    3. Have been trying in vain to find my great grandfather's siblings. If anyone has any suggestions... He was James Joseph Russell b. Nov. 1, 1862 in Wilmington, DE to Edward Russell and Sarah McCormick Russell (both b. Ireland). James shows up in his Uncle Timothy Russell's household on the 1880 census in Hoboken, NJ. Edward and Sarah had died 1874 and 1872 respectively. James had said that he was orphaned and that his siblings "scattered". His siblings were: Thomas Russell b. May 19, 1859 in Wilmingtin, DE Sarah Russell b. Sept, 18, 1861 " John Russell b. Nov. 1, 1862 (James' twin) in Wilm. DE Patrick Russell b. Apr, 2, 1865 in Hoboken, NJ Martin Russell b. Nov. 7, 1867 in Wilm. DE Mary Russell b. Feb 6, 1870 in Wilm.DE The only contact I believe James had with his siblings was with Mary. She became a religious sister and he had a picture of her. I had checked orphan court records but they show nothing. What does that mean? Didn't young children have to be appointed guardians when their parents died? If no records are on file, would that mean they were taken in by family? Any ideas? Thank you, Elizabeth Russell Forsyth

    1. [RUSSELL-L] Russells of Ct who moved to Va or WV
    2. I am still trying to find any RUSSELL who moved from Ct to Va or WV in the late 1790s or early 1800s. My ancestor is Samuel Russell (he usually spelled it with one L.). He was born in 1820 though I believe he had siblings born in 1810 and 1814. He says he was born in Va (before WV) and his mother was Elizabeth. His father is completely unknown except that he was born in Ct. Samuel Russell lived his life in the Coal River area of Kanawha County WV (Charleston, WV) he was a farmer and then a grocer and then in the middle of the 1860s he became a physican. He was married at least two times, Once to Sirena Turley and then in the mid 1860s he married a widow Nancy Cobb and they had four daughters together, Edna, Lillian Ann, Maggie and Lottie. I have been searching for 25 years and still cannot find any trace at all of this mans father. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas. Pat

I have been trying to fine parents and/or siblings to John S. forever, it seems My John S. was born 1815 in what is now known as Marion County, AL. I just recently learned that there was no Marion County, AL. until after 1819 (I believe that date is correct). that area belonged to the state of MS. I think one of the reasons it is difficult to find the Russells and others is because they didn't move so much as the territorial lines moved. I don't know where to look for my people.I was hoping that you William O. could be a sibling of my John S. there is no way to be sure. Your William has children named (John and a Lucy Amanda) that caught my eye because my John S has a son named John T., William, and a daughter named Lucy A. and also the location of Williams birth, the year of his birth, and so I was hoping, but I don't know the Parents name or any of John's sibling, so there is no way to be sure. this is called clutching at straws sorry, didn't mean to be long winded, but was hoping Thank you for your time Donna RUSSELL Davis

    1. [RUSSELL-L] Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799
    2. Several months ago I offered to copy for interested researchers James W. Hagy's thesis on the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods, Virginia. I had searched for many long years before finding an actual copy of this work at a rare book dealer in North Carolina. This thesis was presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, 1966. The original thesis contained no copywrite provision and I have distributed over 300 copies to appreciative genealogists. I thought I was done with this project but recently have received a number of additional requests for this material so I have decided to make ONE more printing run and then retire from the copying business. For all of those folks who for one reason or another failed to secure a copy of this work, this is the last chance. "This thesis is a narrative account of the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods. The community is an interesting case study of the ideas of Frederick Jackson Turner regarding the frontier. Castle's Woods in many ways fits the pattern of the typical frontier community. Apparently first settled by a long hunter, Castle's Woods, like a magnet, drew westward the classic frontier types, hunters, farmers, speculators, surveyors, artisans, and preachers. Even some aristocrates settled there. The usual frontier customs and activities were observed in the community. These included a considerable amount of lawlessness. The greatest problem for the settlers in Castle's Woods was the Indians who were a menace from the time of the first settlement until nearly the end of the eighteenth century. After the Indian problem had been eliminated, the frontier stage quickly passed away...... A large amount of primary materials were used in this study. The most important sources were county records, state archives, national archives, and the Draper Manuscripts." The importance of Castle's Woods is twofold. First, it had its day of importa nce as a stepping stone to the West. Secondly, it is important as a case study of the American frontier. It was the first permanent settlement in Russell County, Virginia, founded in 1760 and located on the Clinch River. Many of the early southwest Virginia families are discussed in detail including Russell, Walker, Cowan, Porter, Moore, Campbell, Stuart, Houston, Montgomery, Snoddy, Thompson, Robinson and many, many more. Detailed accounts of many of the Indian battles are described in great detail and this research material makes interesting reading. If anyone would like a copy of this 140 page thesis the price is $25.00 which includes shipping via priority mail. PLEASE contact me privately at cscunc@aol.com if you have any questions. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

    3. I am going to be a pretty bad and mad listowner right now. Like a school teacher ,I have to scold everyone in hopes the guilty people will become aware of their faults. I have been at the hospital most of the time since last Friday with my husband who has had a triple by-pass surgery, I am tired and irritable. When I got home to rest a minute at my computer, I received over 300 email. I also received 9 copies of the BadTrans virus. These are from various members who belong to one of my lists to whom I am sending this email. I can't believe that there are those of you who do not know to protect your computer with a good anti virus program. There are numerous one's available that cost less than $60. I have two running on my machine. I can't believe that there are those of you who open an attachments when you don't know if you are opening a virus or not. This virus is running rampant and seems to be infecting many people's computers because their own ignorance . If you will not protect yourself and your computer and your friends who have to get your infected mail then maybe you should install Netscape or some other mail program than Microsoft. These things seem to be aimed at OutLook express. I am sorry that I feel I have to send this email. If you are not guilty of any offence then delete this and forget I sent it. If you are not sure, check your machine. If you have the virus it wasn't an accident you got it. What will you do when a really bad one comes along that will fry your computer? 1. [RUSSELL-L] George Russell
    2. I have posted this before but am hoping some of you who seem to have extensive Russell information can help me. We have hit the brick wall at my great-great-grandfather's family. George D. Russell was born Dec. 15, 1823 in NC or NY (we can't read the census report). He married Eliza (or Elizabeth) Ann Dudley but we don't know when or where. He died in Ponca, NE March 4, 1894 and she died in Ponca in 1902. Their children were Frank Fayette (my great-grandfather), Watson, Ellen, Emma Jane, Marlin Deloss, and Nellie. We need to know for sure where he was born, when/where they were married, who their parents were and whether George and Eliza had any siblings - besides any other info anyone could send us. My cousins have been trying to find something on him for 10-15 years or more and I've been looking for 3-4 but none of us have had any luck. We would appreciate any help with the missing information or where to look to find the info. Thanks. Melva
