Hello: I'm sorry if I did not make myself clear in my cry for help with my long time puzzle with my Russell line! I sure did not intend to. I am hoping that someone, useing modern methods, and this gadget and its reach, can give me answers I was never able to find. John H. Russell, born 1817 SC, parents/siblings unknown, area of SC unknown, was in Haywood County NC by 1835. Research indicated no connection to any Russell in the area. He marrys Matilda Cross, of adjoining Buncombe Co NC in 1839, and is in Buncombe Co NC 1840 thru 1853/4. He moves to Cocke Co Tenn in 1853/4, where last child is born. He dies in Cocke Co Tenn in 1859. His widow, and 5 of 6 children are listed in the Cocke Co Tenn census; the 6th child, Mary Ann Russell supposedly jus married, married name unknown. A courthouse fire in 1876 destroyed all marriage records of Cocke Co Tenn. The 1860 Cocke Co Tenn census for District 8, PO Newport, Household/Family 90, page 379 B/14, 7June 1860, shows --- Matilda (Cross) Russell 36 NC, and Elizabeth 16 NC, Leander Merit 14 NC, Margaret 13 NC, William N. 9 NC, and Harriet J. 5 TN. Unlisted Mary Ann would be 19 NC.
Hello. We have 461 members on this list and many people using the Russell message board which is gatewayed to this list. People join the list and leave the list every day. I am sure many people make contact with people searching their line of Russell but probably many more are disappointed at their lack of success. It helps if we ask questions and give people more than just a name. To make connections people need to know some area of the world and some time frame. I am sorry that we have no means of putting better directions on our message boards because I see messages every day with such scant information that I doubt anyone makes progress. I guess I am writing this to myself as much as to the long time members of this list because I catch myself rapidly deleting letters such as those I've described above. I am hoping that I can slow down and check my database better and maybe write a letter to those new researchers asking for better information. I keep thinking that they might have a valuable connection to my Russells that I will miss because of my impatience. So I am asking for your continuing patience and help with our new researchers and I am asking those of you who are new to the list to post your information on the list with what information you have ---at least Who--When--Where? Thank you-- Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bird
Hello Listers: I have had no luck in finding my Russell lines so I am posting my ancestors again in hopes that someone will see a familiar name and will contact me. Jeremiah "Jerry" Russell b 1836- d between 1900-1910. (No other information available on Jerry's ancestry or siblings)He married Eliza J. Hicks 2/21/1858 in Hawkins Co., TN. Eliza J. Hicks (no other infomation found on her ancestry or siblings yet) b c 1844 and d bet 1880-1900. Jerry died between 1900-1910 for he was on the Hawkins Co., TN 1900 census but not on the 1910. He was listed as a widower in 1900. His wife Eliza was on the 1880 Hawkins Co., TN census, and since there was not a 1890 census record surviving, I cannot determine her date of death just yet. Jerry and Eliza had at least the following children: William Russell b c 1859 Hawkins Co., TN and d between 1900 and 1910. He married Mary J. Carpenter in about 1880 in Hawkins Co., TN. Nancy J. b 1861 Hawkins Co., TN, no other information John H. b 1863 Hawkins Co., TN, no other information Mary A. b 1865-1865 Hawkins Co., TN no other information Ruth A. b 1866 Hawkins Co., TN no other information Amanda Elizabeth Russell b 6/12/1868 Hawkins Co., TN d 08/19/1947 Hamblen Co., TN. No marriage record has been found for Amanda. She was living with her brother William and his new wife Mary in Hawkins Co., in 1880. Amanda had Mary E. 7/1891, probably Hawkins or Claiborne Co., TN and d 03/06/1911 in Hamblen Co., TN, Jerry (female) 7/1895 probably Hawkins or Claiborne Co., TN and said to have died around the same time her sister Mary did, but no proof, and William McKinnley b 11/1897 Hawkins or Claiborne Co., TN and d 10/20/1837 his car being hit by a train in Hamblen Co., TN. Mary E., Jerry, and William, who, with their mother Amanda, were living with Jerry Russell, Amanda's father back in Hawkins Co., TN in the 1900 Hawkins Co., TN census. It is speculated that the two girls were fathered by a Howerton and the boy, William (Willie) was fathered by a Howerton or a McKinnley. No proof has been found of any of this but I am working in conjunction with a pair of Howerton researchers who had heard the same story prior to our "meeting" on a board. Amanda went on to have two additional children, Walter Lee b 8/1901 d 7/1966, Hawkins Co., TN and George Joe b 12/1903 d 9/1973 Grainger Co., TN, both under the Parker surname but their death certificates they were Russells. It is not known at this time who their fathers could be for certain. Willie also went under the Russell surname. Amanda did have three more children, Louis and Bessie, twins in 1906 in probably Hamblen Co., TN and Jessie Kate 1909, also probably in Hamblen Co., TN. If not Hamblen, then Grainger. The father is known for these last three children, Joseph Johnson Parker from Hawkins Co., TN. He and Amanda got together and had children altho they never lived together as a couple. Joe's first wife died in 1903. The younger siblings of Amanda are: Laura b bet 1869-1870 Hawkins Co., TN, no other information Jerry b 1871-1874, Hawkins Co., TN and d 1963. Jerry married a Matilda and they had Franklin, Harve, Myrtle, Nellie, Charlie, Molly, Cora, Roy, Pearl, and Walter. All of these children were born between 1898 and 1920, and in either Hawkins or Hamblen Co., TN. Hope to hear from someone! Sheri P. Hello! I am old, and the computer/internet is new, and my attempting to use same is brand new. I seek what happened to these Russells after the 1860's? John H. Russell, the father had died here in October 1859. The oldest daughter, Mary Ann Russell had supposedly just got married. The 1860 census for Cocke County, Tenn., District 8, PO Newport, page 379, June 1860, Dwelling and Household 90, reads- - - - - Matilda Russell 36 F W NC Elizabeth " 16 F W NC Leander M. " 14 M W NC Margaret 13 F W NC William N. " 9 M W NC Harriet J. " 5 F W TN A courthouse fire in Newport destroyed all of the marriage records, and thus the married names of all of these young ladies are lost to my research efforts. Said fire was in 1876, which was even too long ago for me have to got the info before fire. This family came up from Buncombe Co. NC about 1854. I have searched for many many years for these answers. One of these above, came alone to Indiana in winter of 1865/6, my family. Others history unknown?!! Would appreciate any help. Thank you. An Old WWII vet, Dick
30 Jul 2002 Rootsweb Russel, Russell and Russells of NC lists: I would like to share some new insights on the 1850 and 1860 census of Madison Co., TN as it relates to the Terry B. or Perry RUSSELL family. This Russell family was from NC according to the 1850 and 1860 census of Madison Co., TN. See the end of this message for the census transcriptions. The mystery to be solved is: Why can't you find Terry or Perry Russell as a head of household in the 1840 census of TN and why can't you find this same family in the 1830 census of TN? The ages of the children in the household and their nativity indicate they were in these states on these dates. Also, why was Terry B. or Perry Russell not listed in the 1870 census of TN, as where the children from this family? The answer to this mystery is the Terry B. or Perry Russell listed in the 1850 and 1860 census of Madison Co., TN as a head of household was incorrectly listed as male in both census records. Terry was a female, not a male. Terry died in 1865, between the 1860 and 1870 census. Her death in 1865 accounts for her not being listed in the 1870 census of either gender. Because Terry Russell was not the head of household in the 1830 and 1840 census, while her husband John B. Russell was still living, this accounts for the fact that you can't find a Terry B. or Perry Russell as a head of household in these census years in the states mentioned above. If you have an interest in this family, please let me hear from you. Jim Sims Fort Worth, TX jimsims@sbcglobal.net ***** >From currently reviewed sources, Terry B. Russell was the wife of John B. Russell. John B. Russell died in 1848 according to cemetery records, and thus Terry, his wife, would not have been listed as a head of household until the 1850 census. ***** This couple is buried in Madison Co., TN: Cemetery Records of Madison Co., Tennessee , The South Half of the County, The Mid West Tennessee Genealogical Society, Cool Springs Cemetery, copy in Fort Worth Public Library, GEN 976.827 CEMETERY v.2, page 134: Cool Springs Cemetery, located in Deanburg area near G.D. Hi Mary Jo: I find your name GIBSON Russell very interesting. On my mother's side, I have Julia GIBSON Russell, born 19 July 1840 in Barbados, West Indies. Julia is the granddaughter of John Hunt Russell, married before 1798, and is believed to have arrived in Barbados from Ireland. There is no record of his birth or marriage. His wife's maiden name is unknown, her first name was Jane. John Hunt Russell, according to oral history, had another brother that came to Barbados with him. Possibly he left other siblings in Ireland. The early Russells in Barbados were planters. Never know, but there might be some connection...carrying the middle family name of GIBSON. Regards, David (Bladen)
Does anyone have anything on a Gibson Russell? I am looking for information on the one that lived in Nacogdoches County, TX around 1860, and before. I am beginning to think that he may very well be the missing brick in my wall. Thanks, Mary Jo

The following is a summation of a message I received July 19 from the New England Historical and Genealogical Society. Basically it is another attempt (by another state legislature) to close access to vital records. MA bill H5158 is purportedly a rewrite of H132. See WWW.state.ma.us/legis/bills/house/h00132.htm. At present (7/19) the full text of H5158 is not online and it is expected that further line by line examination of the H51258 printed text (36p) will uncover other issues of concern. The birth, marriage & death records (vital records) of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have always been open to the public with few specific exceptions. See www.state.ma.us/legis/laws/mgl/gl-66-toc.htm. House Bill 5158, currently reported out to the Committee on House Rules, would close birth records after 1910 and marriage & death records since 1950 to public access - as of 1/1/04, when the inquirer must be proven to be ONLY the individual in question or the "spouse, children, parent as named on birth record, legal guardian, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, executor, authorized legal representative or authorized genealogist designated by one of the aforementioned persons in writing". Identity fraud is a claimed goal of H5158 without regard to the actual identity fraud methods used & documented by numerous investigations - which include the old fashioned methods of complete fabrication of identity, "trash scouting", wallet theft, home robbery, newspaper obituary targeting or institutional insider records misuse - as well as the advent of the Internet & other electronic transaction interceptions. Identity fraud thieves are generally not given to the methodical, time-consuming and formal task of searching & requesting vital records. You may monitor the status of this bill & check for the full text release at ww.state.ma.us/legis/history/h05158.htm. Formal session are scheduled to end 31 July, but impromptu sessions have been sometimes used to pass such legislation. Those (like myself) who are not MA residents may contact the chair of the House Rules Committee, Angelo M. Scaccia at 617-722-2692 or Rep.AngeloScaccia@hou.state.ma.us. Out-of-state residents may want to refer to the fact that they do research in MA, and when relevant, that they travel to MA to perform their research in vital records. If you are among the million who can claim ancestors in MA - prior to the proposed 1910/1950 exclusions - and do not believe that you will be impacted by such a law, please consult with your contemporary cousins, resident collateral lines, and fellow genealogists. Your interests as an individual and as a genealogist will be affected. The MA Genealogical Council welcomes all questions from interested researchers, as well as shared experiences from other jurisdictions dealing with ill-conceived, reactionary measures to identity fraud, privacy or records preservation and access issues. Send your questions and suggestions to info@massgencouncil.org. Stay informed on this issue by checking the MA Genealogical Council website at http://massgencouncil.home.attbi.com/index.htm and the New England Historic Genealogical Society website at newenglandancestors.org/. My Great Grandfather was John Russell, born in KY Aug. 7, 1844 Died Dec. 19, 1902 and is buried in Roswell NM. Words are 'Gone but not forgotten.' there are three circles on the bottom with the letters FLT in the centers. Nearby, in the same Russell section, there is the grave of a tiny child: T Clarence son of TA and OE Russell B.Sep. 21, 1902 D. Dec. 19, 1902. These are the only people buried in our section, evidently planned for all his children. Does anyone have the child's parents in their family? Julia Kidd kiddo@dfn.com
Need info for B.H.Russell on 1850 Pickens Co., AL census, age 23, gives b.place as TN; on Fayette Co., AL census 1860, listed as Benjamin Russel, b AL. His wife,Olly (Willis), ch: Ausmus, William, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Henry & Andrew. B.H.Russell may have been in Hood Co., TX in 1878. There was an indiv named Ausmus Russell on Pickens Co. 1850 census, age 35 w/wife Margaret. They lived Calhoun Co., MS 1860 until his death in 1890. Was he a brother to B.H. Russell? Does anyone have any info on a Robert and Tabitha Russell of NC who could have had a child ca 1828/29? Thanks to a lovely lady in Norfolk, Va., I just found the names of the parents of my William P. Russell and they were Robert and Tabitha Russell. Our family always said that William was b. in Hampton, Va. and now I find out that he was b. in NC. I have not kept up with those researching the Russells in NC. Thanks, Clare
To all you fabulous Russell researchers! ! ! Thanks for all the suggestions on finding the death date of my William P. Russell. Someone sent me Mr. Kirby's phone # so I tried to call Mr. Kirby on Friday but Elmwood Cemetery's office was closed for the long weekend. Someone else sent me Mr. Kirby's e-mail address so I send him an e-mail. Bright and early this AM, I received copies of the burial cards of not only William P. Russell but also his wife and mother-in-law. William P. Russell died Feb. 3, 1895 and died at Central Ave. & Spring St., Norfolk, Va. Is this the hospital address? His wife Esther A. Russell died Dec. 6, 1906 and died at 500 Herman Ave., Norfolk, Va. Esther's mother Adelia A. (Ball) Russell died Jan. 29, 1882 and died at 50 Queen St., Norfolk. Thanks to you all, I'm moving along. I checked the 1880 Census for William and Esther but Adelia did not live with them. I can't find an Adelia Russell - Odelia Russell or Delia Russell in Norfolk in 1880. The only possible one that I found was a Mary A. Russell living in Norfolk alone. Next I'm going to check the 1870 Census for these 3 Thanks again, Clare Pebworth.

I am searching for Thomas Russell who left England (either Cornwall or Birmingham) after 1947 and arrived somewhere in the US. He was married to Elizabeth Hoskin and they had several children some of which are Charles, Thomas, William (Henry) and John (there are more but I don't have my notes with me at this time). This information has not all been confirmed but if anyone comes across a Thomas Russell and Elizabeth (Hoskin) Russell I would be thrilled to hear from you. Thomas Jnr and John Russell came to Australia prior to 1865 however I do not know what happened to John. Thomas was my GGG Grandfather.
