    2. Horatio Paul McAfee
    3. Greetings. I am new to the list, trying to find out more about one of my ancestors, James Russell, who was living in Davidson Co. TN area with his wife Miriam and numerous children in early 1800's. Both James and his wife are supposed to have been born in Tennessee 1815-1817. I do not have any name for the father of James but suspect the father may have been a very early resident of the area. The Cumberland compact lists a James Russell as one its signers in 1780. Does anyone on the list have expertese in these early Russells in Tennessee? I would appreciate any help. BTW, the daughter of James and Miriam, Charlotte, married one of my g-gfathers, Daniel H. Kirby. Horatio Paul McAfee, Houston

    1. [RUSSELL-L] Re: RUSSELL-D Digest V02 #205
    2. Hi Laurie Carpenter I have to assist a person who has the same name as my mother ( Carpenter) before she married. I have a lot of Russell info in Indiana and Ohio. However none of what you posted connects with any solid info I have. My research uncovered LOTS of John Russells, some with middle initials. My line were Quakers and they kept good records. It is a good resource to research. I have always felt the Ohio and Indiana Russells had some connections someplace but I have not been able to stick them all together. I have one John Russell born 1799 in PA. and moved to Indiana. Some of his siblings went to Ohio and Indiana. Some of them I have nothing on. Johns(1799) father was Samuel born in VA in 1771. died in Ohio. Samuel married Elizabeth Vinnedge The reason I mention this is, the Vinnedge name was very popular in this family and was handed down and used as a first name. i.e. Vinnedge Russell born to Sam and Liz 1811 in Ohio John "George' Russell born in Va. 1782 died in Miami Co Ohio. He married Nancy Vinnedge- Liz sister. They also had a son named Vinnedge Russell born in PA 1806 and died in Ohio. All these families had a bunch of kids and tracking them all down is impossible. Is do have some connections with descendants of some of these families and have exchanged info if there seems to be a fit. Good luck Laurie, hope I did not confuse you too much. So far I have found 12 'cousins' that connect to my line and it has broadened my Russell file considerably. PaulDR@aol.com Paul D Russell

    1. [RUSSELL-L] John D. Russell b. 1816 Ohio
    2. Carpenter
    3. Hello fellow researchers, Looking to connect with other fellow researchers of the Russell family from Ohio and Indiana for a possible connection with the John D. Russell b. 1816. John Russell stated in the census that he was born in Ohio yet one of his daughters stated in a later census that he was born in Indiana. John D. Russell married Lucy Ann Montague before 1839 and quite possibly in Indiana. From other researchers, it is stated that they married in Tippecanoe, Indiana though I have not been able to locate that marriage. Their first child, Joshua L. Russell was born in Indiana but I have not been able to locate a location exactly. Their second child was born in Missouri, either Andrew or Atchison County. Family file John D. Russell b. August 26, 1816 in Ohio d. January 26 1890 in Fremont Co., Iowa. married Lucy Ann Montague b. April 13, 1818 in Augusta Co., Virginia d. May 18, 1897 in Fremont Co., Iowa daughter of James and Catharine (Sheets) Montague. Both buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Fremont Co., Iowa. Children Joshua L. Russell b. August 26, 1839 in Indiana Sarah Ellen Russell b. March 25, 1841 in Missouri Mary Jane Russell b. March 6, 1843 in Atchison Co., Missouri Hannah Ann Russell b. April 13, 1844 in Missouri George Washington Russell b. March 17, 1846 in Missouri Martha Evelyn Russell b. November 8, 1849 in Atchison Co., Missouri Lucy C. Russell b. February 25, 1852 in Atchison Co., Missouri John R. Russell b. February 25, 1854 in Atchison Co., Missouri William J. Russell b. February 11, 1858 in Atchison Co., Missouri Samuel C. Russell b. February 4, 1859 in Atchison Co., Missouri Talitha Elizabeth Russell b. November 6, 1860 in Atchison Co., Missouri I have quite a bit of family information on the children as well as the Montague line and would be willing to share what I have as I have been working on this family for a couple of years now. Martha Evelyn was my g-grandmother and is where my line comes down from. Recently found a book on Russell Family History in which it pertained to a John Russell Sr. b. bet 1760-1770 who moved from PA to Adams Co., Ohio and by 1830 was in Scioto? Co., Ohio. In 1840, this particular John Russell was living next to his son Alexander in Fayette Co., Indiana. I am curious at this point to find out if this Russell family could be a connection to the John D. Russell which I am researching as their seem to be some coincedences. Look forward to possibly connecting and working with someone... Sincerely, Laurie Carpenter

    3. I am researching a William Russell that married Elizabeth Christian from Hawkins County, TN. He was born in 1825. He could be your Jerry's brother. I am trying to prove that my William is the same William listed in the census records for Hawkins County. Why I believe it is my William is that Elizabeth Christian is living a few doors down from where the William and his parents and siblings are. Darryl Chapman LaFollette, Campbell County, TN "Sheri P. 1. [RUSSELL-L] Some Russell errors in 1800 NC Census book by Jackson & Teeples
    2. Jim Sims
    3. 4 Aug 2002 Russel, Russell and Russell-NC lists: While researching some RUSSELL families in Montgomery Co. NC I, like many others no doubt, consulted the "North Carolina 1800 Census" by R.V. Jackson and G.R. Teeples, a computer generated work from the mid 1970's containing a transcription of the census, alphabetized by surname and first name. When I looked in the Jackson work, there were no Russells of any kind listed in Montgomery Co., NC for 1800. This struck me as a bit strange, so I pulled out the microfilm copy of the original documents in my local library and looked through the roll with Montgomery Co., NC. There WERE Russell families in Montgomery Co., NC in the 1800 census, and some Russell families have been misidentified as families living in Mecklenburg Co., NC in the Jackson publication. The following families were in Montgomery Co., NC, not Mecklenburg: Name Page # (handwritten) Page # (stamped) ------------------- -------------------- ---------------- James Russell 482 480 Moses Russell 483 481 Thomas Russell 484 482 Richard Russell 499 497 Jordon Russell 522 502 The microfilm roll I looked at had both Montgomery (first) and Mecklenburg (second) counties. There was no blank space on the film to clue you when you stopped liking at one county and then started looking at the next. By carefully reading the margins and looking at the last page of the census for Montgomery Co., NC, it is clear where one county stops and the other begins on the microfilm. You just have to look more closely than usual. Jim Sims Fort Worth, TX jimsims@sbcglobal.net

    3. I am sorry about this mess. The 1850 Buncombe Co NC census, and the 1860 Cocke County Tenn Mortality Schedual confirms the birthdate of John H. Russell, and birthplace. William N.Russell came alone, 1866, age 16, to Indiana. He never returned to Tenn., nor was ever known to have had any contact with anyone back there, or with any his relatives. Whatever, it died with him, in Indana, in 1913, 10 years before I was born. I was not able to identify any of his family left in Tenn, 1860's, at any later date,- - - nor anywhere. Thus, I have a story without a "beginning", which is bad enough, but also one without an "ending", except for the one part. And for the questions, on me, yes, if John H. died in 1859, and William N. in 1913, and 1913 was 10 years before I was born, I must be old. Also, I was not kidding about the ole' WWII vet; I served as a Combat Infantryman with the Famed (not me) 45th Div. Thank you for your courtesy, and any help. Take care. Regards. Dick
