Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/oZEBAIB/100.112.128.189.1 Message Board Post: I descend from Seneca Russell (b. 1812) and his son Albert Russell (b. 1843?), who married Celia Fox. Celia Fox was cousin to Elizabeth Moss, who married John W. Russell. I have thus far unsuccessfully tried to tie John W. Russell to my Russells. The Moss and Fox families seem quite entangled, and I believe that it is likely that the Russells were also a part of the tangle. Celia's mother Elizabeth (Moss) Fox and Celia's aunt Delilah (Moss) Scott lived in Appanoose County, Iowa, during the Civil War; and Delilah was buried in Appanoose, perhaps after dying in childbirth. Delilah is buried close to her child Elizabeth Scott in Cooley Cemetery. John Love and David Love, children of Lyman Love and Mary Moss, fled Missouri, came into Appanoose long enough to enlist in local Union forces and then marched back into Missouri in a unit with their Iowa cousins. A child named Elias A. Russell (d. Feb.15, 1875, age 1 y. 10 m. 25) is buried among the Foxes in Cooley Cemetery in Appanoose. I cannot account for Elias Russell in my Russell records. He might be the child of a Russell-Fox-Moss connection that I do not know about. Russell is a very common name. It could be that Albert Russell and John W. Russell were entirely unrelated, but I think that it is more probable that there was some family relationship. J.Mitchell 11mitchell@mchsi.com

    2. Mary Majesty
    3. Hi I have the book "Property Lines from the Old Survey Books, Pittsylvania County, VA 1746-1840" by Roger C. Dodson. Some of the property owned by both these families(Turley and Russell) crossed over to Henry Co., VA and Franklin Co.,VA. In fact Franklin Co is where my early Pittsylvania Co., VA people were married. They were the Shorter family and lived in the Calland area. Sorry but none were neighbors according to these ownership records, however some may have rented? John Turley, Jr had 23 acres in 1804. Grid 12-H William Russell had 367 in 1764, br of Double Cr., 121 p Grid 15-B(some neighbors in 1764 were Henry Talley, William King, Timothy Stamps, Zachariah Waller) William Russell had 274 in 1779, brs fall Cr, Grid 14-C(some neighbors in 1779 were Orlanda Smith, John Watters, William Lynch) John Russell had(in one area) 1,200 acres, gt br of Cascade Cr.(SW corner of Co.) in 1754 Grid 10-A(neighbors were later dates, 1762 William Edwards, Henry Rice, John Rice John Danelson). Just south of this property is Rockingham Co., North Carolina. John Russell had(in another area) 434 acres in 1749, 344 acres in 1751(N Dan River) and 404 acres in 1751(Ss Dan River), Grid 11-A.Is there a possible bridge owner?(neighbors were later dates, 1780 Wm Call, 1762 James Cox, 1756 Nicholas Perkins, and by that Dan River property a Constant Perkins 1778 12 acres Ss Dan River. There is no real explanation of the notes or shorten words. I can only say that the writer of this compilation of surveys did obtain the information from documents and it took a long time to get this all together. Also there was Pittsylvania Co., VA landowners per 1797 land Tax, list in the Piedmont Lineages Vol XXI No. 4, 1999 which gave Russell names of Ezekiel, John, and William and Turley names of John, John and John, Jr. Smiles, Mary in Alabama P.S. I'm not sure these people lived on this land. On Tue, 1 Oct 2002 13:22:12 EDT PJAFLA@aol.com writes: > I am looking for a marriage for Jane Turley. She was born about 1775-80. 1. [RUSSELL-L] NC Russells or Parker and Stafford connections
    2. Hi gang, I will try my brick wall again. I finally discovered through Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Va., William P. Russell was born in NC, the son of Robert Russell and Tabitha (????). The family always said that William was b. in Hampton, Va. so I have spent many years researching that area. William was born ca 1828/29 and by 1850 was living in Norfolk, Va. Does anyone researching Russells in NC have any information on a Robert Russell and his wife Tabitha? I'm guessing the P. in William's name stands for PARKER and that could be Tabitha's maiden name. One of William's children also had the middle name of STAFFORD.. I'm crossing my fingers and toes. Thanks a bunch, Clare

    3. We are being hit by yet another virus. If you choose not to protect yourself by installing a good virus program, and if you just open any attachment that comes to you-- you will soon be infected. These things are on automatic. They use a Name to be from , that they have found in someone's email address book. I have seen them say they were from a rootsweb list ( they are not) I have seen them say they are from ME. They were not. Just be aware and educate yourself. I am not going to name the virus because if it isn't one it may be one of 100. If you run Outlook Express you are vulnerable. If you run netscape I think you are safe but don't bet on it. I'm not that smart about computers. This is the only virus warning I expect to see on any of my lists. Protect yourself. Other wise if you get one you may need it for a very expensive lesson. Keep safe. Love Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bird

    2. David Bladen
    3. John Hunt Russell & Jane (maiden name unk) were married in or before 1798. William Thomas Russell was one of their 10 children. Two of WTR's children were Downes Nurse Russell & Edward Richard Russell. One of Downes' 7 children was Egard Norton Kingsley Russell. One of Edward Richard's was Kenneth Bertram Russell who married Eliza Davey. All of these Russells were from the island of Barbados, West Indies. Kenneth Bertram Russell migrated to the USA and is believed to have died in Providence, RI. Downes Nurse Russell's granddaughter was in the possession of a genealogical chart. The first person appearing on the chart is William Sinclair, brother to 11th Earl of, what appears to be, Caithness. Among some of the family names which are linked to the Sinclairs on this chart are: Russell & Callander. All of these family names appear in the records of Barbados. Unfortunately no past member of the family noted the connection between Downes Russell and the Sinclairs from one of the British Isles. If no connection, why did his granddaughter possess the chart?? Kenneth Bertram Russell was my grandfather's brother...that is my connection with the Russells. Oral history has it that two brothers originally came from Scotland and settled in Barbados, owning small sugar plantations at that time. Records show that these early Russells were "Planters". I am primarily interested in any information on John Hunt Russell. Was it he and a brother that were the original Russells in Barbados, or was it his father and uncle who came there first? I am also interested on any information on Kenneth Bertram Russell and his wife? Of course I will be glad to share what I have on the Russells from 1798 in Barbados, should there be an interest. However, in earlier documents that have been filed, it is possible that his parents only used William- which makes it almost impossible to trace, since there were about 50 to 60 William Russell's born about that time and lived in Southern TN and Northern AL during this time frame.. According to stories passed down from John Calhoun to my Grandmother, William O. was suppose to be the son of Major Russell for whom Russellville, Al. is named. I think I can say that I have proven that this is impossible. I have a lot of information on the Major & his family. his one son that was named William has no known children born after 1836. 3. Hi, In the book Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Co., VA 1655-1900 by Eva Eubank Wilkerson, there was listed a marriage of Joseph Russell to Jane Bruce daughter of George(no actual date.) This was per a Will of 1713 in Richmond Co.,VA(Rappahannock Co was divided in 1692 and the north became Richmond Co and the south side was Essex Co.) Another Russell marriage was mentioned in a Will and Deed dated 1672 the names as John Russell and Elitia Billington daughter of Luke(no actual date.) I believe the name Joseph is a newer spelling of Josiah. I have one ancestor(not a Russell) that married the first time as Josiah and the second time as Joseph. Have you ever looked at the 1789/90 VA Tax Charts that are on line? Also, the Swem book which index the William and Mary College Quarterly, Tyler's Historical and Genealogical Quarterly, and VA Magazine of History and Biography may give you a clue as to other Russell families that could be your Josiah's parents. Lots of bigger library will have the Quarterlies (by me the West Florida Univ. has the William and Mary College Quarterly.) If you can get the index for any Russell in the Wm & M publication and you don't have access to them let me know.
