I can't immediately see a connection. 1849 is too early for my Phebe, but of course it puts the name into the line for potential later use by others. Also PA is not necessarily out of the question, since my Phebe ends up in Sussex County, NJ. Still, I can't make a connection. Sue

Howdy, I am a descendant of Nicholas RUSSELL of Bullitt Co.,KY. I am posting everything I have found on-line pertaining to the name Nicholas RUSSELL, prior to 1833. Obviously the first three items do not pertain to the Nicholas RUSSELL of Bullitt County, KY but this Nicholas could be his father and William his grandfather? Also I have found items pertaining to a Nicholas RUSSELL after 1833, but that would be Nicholas Jr., the grandson mentioned in the slave transaction shown below near the bottom of this post. WILLIAM RUSSELL: The man who sold Richard Harrel his land along the Shenandoah River, was born in 1680 at Stafford County, Virgnia. He died in Prince William County, Virginia in 1756. William Russell owned all of the land in an area known as Sandy Hook (Orange Co., then Augusta Co., today Shenandoah Co.) Altogether he owned more than 6,000 acres. Later he would sell much of this land to Christian Bowman in 1737 (Orange Co.Deed Book 2, p.1). He and his wife Grace had four children: Katherine Thomas Russell b. 1711, William Russell, Jr. b. abt. 1713, Nicholas Russell b. abt. 1715 and Martin Russell b. abt 1731.(16 years later?) All four children were born in Stafford County, Virginia. The younger William Russell was also known as Capt. Russell. His land bordered Richard Harrell's land in Augusta Co. During the Revolution, William Harrell was said to have served as a scout for Capt. Russell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ 22 Oct 1724 - 15 Apr 1730 Will of John SANDERS of Charles Co., MD Ex. instructed as to payt. of debts, especially debt to estate of Wm. I've seen her birthplace tentatively listed as Middletown, NJ, or as Stanhope, NJ -- but mostly I've seen her listed with no birthplace indicated. What I know for sure is that she married Levi Ayers (II), who was born in 1762. He was the son of Levi Ayers and Temperance Wicks/Weeks, a family from the Woodbridge, NJ area. This family later moved to the Wantage, Sussex Co., NJ area. I noticed that one of the wives was named Phebe, but this set of parents may be too early for my Phebe. The son's family group does not list a daughter named Phebe, but there may have been other sons as well. ANY HELP APPRECIATED. The Russell line has been a roadblock. Sue

These stones are in a small rural cemetery outside of Santa Rosa, Ca. I don't believe these are related to me but I'm kind of stuck in my Russell line so I'm not positive. There are only 3 readable stones in the cemetery, most have been vandalized or submerged. The farmer has cleaned the site up nicely and refenced it but it has taken much damage. One of the Russell stones says Iola Russell 1876-1958, the other says, M.S. Russell 1867-1943 and Mid Russell 1898-1956. These two stones are still in good shape. Sent the following message to resOynbe@alltell.net, to answer a question sent to me, it did not go through so must send it through this site. Bill, I have a complete history on William T. Russell b 1805 in Lincoln Co., KY. He was the son of Ephriam Russell b abt 1775 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and Elizabeth Shelton b 1775 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. They moved to Lincoln Co., KY for the 1803 to 1809 tax rolls. They wee in Christian Co., KY for the 1810 Federal Census, Henderson Co., KY for the 1820 and 1830 census and Jefferson Co., IL for the 1840 census. Ephriam died in Jefferson Co., IL in 1846. William T. Russell married Mary Shelton, a 1st cousin. Other sons of Ephriam and Elizabeth were Daniel b abt 1810, Christian Co., KY, and Thomas Russell b abt 1812 in Christian Co., KY. William T. and Mary Shelton Russell are my ggg grandparents. My 1810 census for Lincoln Co., KY shows the following Russells that had sons age 0-10; Joseph J. Russell, and William Russell. I have no record of either being my relatives. I also checked all my Russell Registers Vol. 1-22 and found the following Josiah Russells that might be yours: Josiah Russell m/ Nancy Ward, 8 Feb 1845 in Weakley Co., TN. Josiah Russell m/ Emily Humphries, 24 Sept. 1870 in White Co., IL. Josiah Thompson Russell, in S.C., 19 Inf. Co. I in Civil War. Josiah J. Russell in TN 28 Inf. Co. F. in the Civil War. Josiah O. Russell in MO. 3 Cav. Co. H. in the Civil War. Josiah did not seem to be a popular name for Russells. Hope this is of some value to you. If there is anything else that I could do to help you, let me know. Don Russell, DRuss33706@aol.com

I am very stuck on my g-grandmother. Her maiden name was Louraney (or maybe Lou Annie ) Russell, born 1883. She married Squire Stacy (1878-1968), son of William Bert Stacy (B. 1852). They were probably married and lived somewhere around Hazard, Breathitt, or Perry Co., KY. I have many aunts and uncles (my mom had 11 brothers and sisters, and my grandmother had 9)and no one seems to know anything about her. Any info that anyone has would be great.
Dear Linda, It's difficult to aid you without knowing more details. What was the years of the census data, and what was her reported age? This gives a hint as to birth year. You stated she married James CUPPLES but what was the appoximate year of that marriage? Using the LDS FamilySearch site I found several James CUPPLES born in Mufflin. Pennsylvania - in 1845, 1837 and 1789. I could not find a marriage anyone with a RUSSELL surname. The LDS database is full of errors, so this doesn't rule out that marriage records exist. Looking forward to more details, Jim Clark ----- Original Message ----- From: "RonLyn Mockenhaupt" <ronm@westol.com> To: <RUSSELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 18, 2002 6:36 AM Subject: [RUSSELL-L] Ann Elizabeth Russell b. 1813 ME or PA > Seeking information on Ann Elizabeth RUSSELL who was born in either > Maine or PA depending on what census you read.
