    3. Our Russell dna project is getting larger and larger. The more Russell families which are tested, the more chances we will have a finding matches to help with genealogy. Remember, even negative results are good, since that means there are families that you don't have to consider in your searches anymore! If you go to www.familytreedna.com and read the general information as well as typing in RUSSELL in the search box to see about the Russell project, you will find info about the Russell families who have already been analyzed, including mine -- Judy Russell, R6. 3. Hello all, I've done fairly extensive research on the family of Habakkuk Russell (c170-1754) of Carteret County, NC. I'm looking for additional information on this family as well as contact with other descendants. Habakkuk's children include: 1. Ann Sophia Russell (c1742-c1795), she married Jonathan Hibbs 2. Rebecca Russell (b. c1744) 3. Sarah Russell (c1746-c1805), she married Nathaniel Wilder 4. David Russell Sr. (c1748-1813), he married (1) Anna Read, (2) Tabitha Hill 5. Abraham Russell (b. c1750) 6. Abigail Russell (b. c1752) I'm descended from David Russell Sr. and his first wife Anna Read through their son William Russell who moved his family to Jackson County, Illinois in the 1830s.. I'm extremely interested in any Russells eastern NC prior to 1800. My research indicates that Habakkuk Russell came from Russells out of Lower Norfolk and Princess Anne Counties in VA. For more information see my current theory at http://www.mindspring.com/~jsruss/russell/rsl-docs.htm . Joel http://www.mindspring.com/~jsruss/

The List admin is the one to start those and at the time Rootsweb is changing over to a new system, this is not the time for 390 people to start flooding the servers. He was married to Sirena Turley in 1848 and they had 5 children and Sirena died in about 1863 and he married a widow Nancy Browden COBB and they had four little girls together. 3. Okay Russell's lets get the Russell list a moving. I would like to know where your Russell's come from. Mine that I'm working on comes from Virginia into Georgia and then settled in Bedford and Marshall Counties of Tennessee. I'm trying to find all of Thomas Russell children and their families. Thomas is the son of William Madison Russell and Martha Callaway Russell. I come down Thomas and Rhoda Allen Russell son James Carroll Russell. 3. The RUSSELL list and all other mailing lists are changing over to Rootsweb's new Mailman mailing system. You should have received an e-mail about the new system a week or so ago. The change should help the lists run smoothly and cut down on the number of spam messages that try to access the lists. There are a couple of changes that will affect you: The first is for those who receive both individual e-mails and digest mail. You can no longer receive both mailings to the same e-mail address. It was an unavoidable part of the change-over, and it affects me, too. So if you were receiving both mailings, you'll have to resubscribe to the Digest with another e-mail address if you wish to keep receiving it. I used a yahoo address I had. Also people with AOL should check their spam folders and if they find list mail there they need to be sure to CLICK THE *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send the list mail to the inbox. It is VERY important to help train the filters and let AOL know that this new server can be trusted. Then we will not be receiving messages from the RUSSELL message board at Rootsweb for a time. The staff is working to correct this problem, but until it is running again, you might wish to check the it . http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.russell The message boards are also getting ready for a major update to make them easier to navigate and use. You may want to check them to see if something new has arrived that would interest you. If you should experience any problems with the mailing list in the near future, please let me know at [email protected] and I'll pass it along to the proper staff members. 3. I'm trying to find everyone that come down from Thomas Russell who was the son of William Madison Russell. I'm trying to add to my information on all the children of Thomas and Rhoda Allen Russell. Thomas was born in 1803 in Georgia, married Rhoda Allen B. 1801 in Georgia and lived at Poplins Crossroads in Bedford Co., Tennessee. This family of Allen was not related so far as we know to the Cyrus Newton Allen, husband of Lucy Russell. We know Thomas and Rhoda had these children: A. James born 1822 in Georgia (My line) B. Sarah born 1823 in Georgia married Mr. Brown (We know nothing of this line) C. William Madison born 29 Nov 1825 in Tennessee (We have this line) D. Nancy J born 1828 in Tenn, twin to Mary J. (Know nothing) E. Mary J. born 1828 in Tenn, twin to Nancy J (Know Nothing) F. Elizabeth born 1830 in Tenn and marr William Neely (I think I have) G. Lydia born 1833 in Tenn (I know nothing) H. Beulah (Beatie) born 1837 in Tenn Marr Mr. McElwrath (I know nothing) I. Martha born 1838 in Tenn (Know nothing) J. Margaret born 1842 in Tenn died in 1907 marr: N. M. Wheeler (not much known) I would like to know more about her little family K. Thomas born 1843 in Tenn; twin to Elijah Allen; died in 1863 in Battle of Chickamauga L. Elijah Allen born 1843 in Tenn Twin to Thomas Married Virginia Ann Stewart (I Have) If you by any chance come from one of these lines and you know more then I do please write to me so I can update my genealogy. I'm wanting to add to my Russell booklet that I'm making aobut our Russell's. I'm trying to put this all together into my Genealogy program and then make a book out of it for my family. In the Book Russell and Kindred Family there wasn't much about my line from Thomas down and that is what I'm wanting to write about. My father was named after his grandfather who was David Allen who was the son of James Carroll Russell who was the son of Thomas. David Allen also went by Elijah David Allen on some of his legal papers so he even had his uncle name. But most of the time he went by Allen. So if there is anyone out there that can help me please send me your genealogy as a word document or something like that so I can print it out and study it and put it into my genealogy program. Sincerely Donna [email protected]

A few yards away, their heads bowed, with rifles pointing towards the ground, stood their comrades, a guard of honour. More than 200 years after their deaths, men and women who fought with Nelson and helped drive Napoleon out of Egypt were fittingly laid to rest. Rescued from the ravages of the weather and tourist ‘vandalism’, soldiers, sailors and marines – and in some cases their partners and children – of the 1798 and 1801 campaigns were re-interred with honour in Alexandria following three years’ work by Nelsonian experts. With full military honours, led by Royal Marines buglers and a guard from Type 22 frigate HMS Chatham, the dead of Nelson’s Island were buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Chatby cemetery in the Egyptian port. The bodies had originally been laid to rest in a sandstone outcrop five miles offshore in Abukir Bay in the Nile Delta, near where Nelson routed the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Archaeologist Dr Paolo Gallo began excavations on the island – measuring just 350 yards by 150 – while researching its ancient Egyptian history. But the digs soon uncovered much more recent burials, notably British dead from the early 19th century – prompting three years’ work on the tiny rocky outcrop. Nick Slope, chairman of the Nelson Society, began poring over records of the period and began piecing together a fascinating slice of Nelsonian history, overlooked or forgotten for nearly two centuries. “The burials on the island were under threat of erosion – they were becoming exposed and washed away by winter rains,” said Mr Slope. “What was more worrying was that the island has recently been opened up to tourism and the dead were being dug up and their remains taken as trophies or scattered under the mistaken impression that they were ancient ‘mummies’.” The remains of 32 individuals were located and re-interred, but Mr Slope’s research suggests that around 80 RN and RM personnel were buried on Nelson’s Island – named after the admiral by his commanders at the Nile – plus 76 soldiers. The dead were not killed at the Nile in 1798, but rather succumbed to their wounds or sickness after the clash (most of the dead in the battle itself were buried at sea), or in the 1801 campaign in Egypt when the Fleet anchored in Abukir Bay. Some remains have been positively identified, chiefly Cdr [Commodore] JAMES RUSSELL of HMS Ceres. His frigate served initially as a troopship in the 1801 operations, before assuming the role of a hospital ship. Russell, who died in September 1801, was buried with honour in a well-made coffin, dug deep into the ground, with a cross at the head of the grave – all signs of status. His descendant, RAF veteran Gordon Watson, from Waterlooville in Hampshire, and his wife Joan watched as the commander was laid to rest for a second time. “He did not have any children, so it’s fitting that he is buried here with his friends – who were his family, really,” said Mrs Watson. The men of 1798 and 1801 probably little knew of the island’s history when they chose to bury their dead there, but it was an entirely appropriate resting place. “We suspect in antiquity the island was probably connected to the mainland and served as an acropolis, before subsequently being used as a fortress,” said Mr Slope. “For me, this a job done – we have saved the graves of 30 people. You could almost say this experience has changed my life. It has been tough, but fascinating. “Often we are just digging things up, but here I feel I have done something worthwhile. We have closed the circle by giving them a proper burial and recognition.” Ceremonies at Chatby, led by a Royal Navy chaplain and defence staff from Britain’s embassy in Egypt, did not solely concentrate on the Napoleonic era. The Royal Marines prayer was read over the grave of Mne Joe Cook, who succumbed to bronchial pneumonia in 1945 while serving with HMS Nile. ---------- Refer to: BBC video History Channel TV show: "Meet the Ancestors" episode title: "Nelson's Forgotten Heroes" aired: June 2006 http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/empire_seapower/women_nelson_navy_01.shtml http://www.sbs.com.au/lostworlds/

    1. Alonzo Haventon Russell, b 1821, Royalton, Windsor, VT
    2. Judith F. Russell
    3. I'd like to find some members of the large family of Alonzo Haventon Russell, 31 Jul 1821 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, USA, a descendant of John Russell and Sarah Champney. Alonzo was a early Mormon missionary. Based upon a dna kit submitted by one of Alonzo's descendants to the Sorenson DNA project, it seems as if he is a match to several more recent dna submissions which are all very similar and are shown as Russell lineage I at the Russell dna project: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/r/russell/results.html All of these Russell lines appear to have had a Common ancestor somewhere in England, probably, and several modern Russells are working together on finding the link. Look forward to hearing from Russells on any of these lines. Judy Russell (r6) Bogart, Georgia, USA
