I'm hoping someone can help me find some information on my ancester Thomas Russell (also spelled Russel), who was born around 1817 in Ireland (according to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses). Around 1842, he married Louisa Marshall (born abt. 1817 in England). They had at least three children in England: Mary Ann (born around 1844) Elijah (born around 1846), married Ellen Chambers in Jersey City, NJ James Joseph (born around 1848), married Margaret McCarthy (1847-1906) in Jersey City, NJ They emigrated to the US between 1848 and 1850, though I have been unable to find their arrival. The 1850 census of Brooklyn, NY shows them living in the 10th Ward. In Brooklyn, at least two more children were born: William (born around 1855), married Frances ? in NJ Louisa (born around 1857) The family were living in Brooklyn for the 1850 and 1860 census. The 1870 census finds them in Jersey City, NJ. I have been unable to find Thomas in the 1880 census. I'd love to hear from anyone who can shed some light on who Thomas's parents were or where in Ireland he hailed from. Good hunting, Susan Huff

List Admin here. It seems that we have time for lots of post to Russell list before Rootsweb starts implementing their changes. It will not have an effect on our list until after September 1st. I will not call a "rollcall " because when you post to the list I do not want those words used as the subject line. Please write to the list if you will and put a name into the subject line as I have done with my husband's first known ancestor. James Russell was born 1772 in PA. He married Margaret Unknown last name and all their children were born in South Carolina. James and Margaret died in Pickens Co. AL. Their children were : 1. Elizabeth born 1793 who married John Oxford. She died in Choctaw County Mississippi 2. Matthew C. born 1801 died after 1880 I have 8 children for him but no wife's name. 3. Savilla Russell born 1805 died Limestone Co. TX 1884 she married David J. Tidwell 4. Daniel Rufus Russell born 1812 married Temperance Ruth Franks they died in Neshoba Co. MS. 5. John Russell 1814 SC. I have no wife or childlren for him . One problem with this family that I have run into. My husband had a 37 marker YDNA test and he matches men named GREER and GRIER close enough that FTDNA said within the last 100 to 300 years this line of Russell descended from a Grier common ancestor. This is why we are so interested in finding a Male Russell from any of the above Children of James and Margaret Russell We need to try and pinpoint a time . His parents were Seneca Russell and Tabitha Rodgers; this Russell family moved to Whiteside County, Illinois. I think that George enlisted in the Union Army on May24, 1861, as a private in Company B 13th Illinois Infantry. When he enlisted he was 21, with grey eyes and red hair. He was discharged in 1863 in Booma, Mississippi, with a disability. I can find no Internet records of him after the Civil War, but most of his siblings went west. Is George in anyone's database? I have really interest data about his paternal grandmother's line and am willing to exchange information. My knowledge of the Russell line is limited to George's father (Seneca Russell) and his grandfather (Richard Russell from Washington County, New York). George was my mother's greatuncle.
