He was appointed administrator of the estate of Silas M. Thomas who died before Jan 1892 in Russell Co., KY. I am at a dead end on Silas M. Thomas, my gg-grandfather, who was born in TN. He was on the 1850 census of Robertson Co., TN. He moved to Logan Co., LY about 18551 where several of his children were born. His wife was Frances Jane Fletcher, daughter of Cargill Fletcher of Logan Co.. Any information regarding possible Thomas/Russell connection, Fletcher/Russell connection or possible Ireland/Russell connection would be appreciated. I include the Ireland surname because in 1850 two little Ireland girls were in the household of Silas M. Thomas, Martha and Cornelia, ages 6 and 4. Living next to the Thomas family was the family of Daniel Ireland. I know people were helpful back then, however I feel that it was probably unlikely even then to take in unrelated children.
G'Day Steven, I'd be interested in hearing more about your Pennsylvanian Russells. I'm descended from Thomas Jefferson Russell who was born in 1818 in Pennsylvania and I have no info on his parents or siblings, although from TJ on down I'm doing well. LAND WARRANTS IN THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD FROM PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES. THIRD SERIES, VOLUME 25: PROVINCIAL PAPERS: WARRANTEES OF LAND in the SEVERAL COUNTIES of the STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA. 1730-1898. EDITED BY WILLIAM HENRY EGLE, M.D., M.A. VOL. II. WM. STANLEY RAY. STATE PRINTER OF PENNSYLVANIA 1898. WARRANTEES OF LAND IN THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD 1771-1893. NOTE: Land warrants were the first document issued to a person who wanted to obtain land from the state. A land warrant gave the applicant permission to have the land surveyed. When the survey was returned to the state with a fee, a patent was issued to the individual. There can be many years between the issuing of a warrant and the issuing of a patent, and it may not have been issued to the same person. A patent is the equivalent of a deed between the state and an individual. All land transfers after a patent was issued would be by deed. Most deeds (but not all) were recorded in the county courthouse of the county that had jurisdiction at the time the deed was recorded. This may be the current county, but it could also be any of the parent counties for a particular location. Some deeds were never recorded, and some may have been recorded much later than the date of the deed, some more than 100 years later. Copies of the original documents are available through the PA State Archives in Harrisburg. In most cases, the documents do not include the signature of the person warranting the land. Many of the warrants include the year the land was first settled (listed as the date when interest was to start, almost always on March first). This, however, may not be the date the the warrantee settled on the land if the land had changed hands before a warrant was applied for. He was by profession, a horse trader. His youngest child, Johnnie Vela Russell Jones was my Grandmother. This is the story my grandmother told me: Thomas left Alabama for Arkansas at the urging of his sister, who married a Cassidy and was already settled in Arkansas. Thomas' sister was Virgina Dell Cassidy's grandmother and great-grandmother of William Jefferson Clinton.- I am sorry I don't have the file about this family connection at my fingertips- I am new at this. The Thomas Russell family did not stay in Arkansas. They moved back to Red Level, Alabama sometime between 1897 and 1899. Prior to this, they lost two children, Mary Alabama "Bama"Russell and Arthur "Little" Russell. I think these children might be buried in Arkansas. My grandmother was born in Red Level,Alabama in 1899. Thomas was helping at a local cotton gin (in/around 1901-2?) and his arm was accidently mangled/caught in the gin and he died of gangrene.-This is why! he is buried in Alabama. His death left his wife, Matilda Henrietta Garrison Russell to raise her girls alone. Ora Belle, Harley Dream, Pearl, Alsia and Johnnie. By the way, I remember Aunt Belle fondly=)
