I don't know whether this has already been mentioned, but George E. Russell has contributed his list of early American Russells at the Russell DNA project web site: List of Early Russells: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/r/russell/disc.html Several of the early lines have already had DNA kits submitted. The Riverus Russell in my line, son of Nicholas Russell, Jr and Mary Ann (Leverett) Russell, seems to have left Connecticut for New York shortly after 1800. However, after his mother's death (around 1756), his father married Mary Perkins, and they had children, including the following sons: Elmore Russell, b. 14 Feb 1761; Aaron Russell, b. 27 Jan 1766; Moses Perkins Russell, b. 7 Aug 1768, d. before 1773; Moses Russell, b. 18 Oct 1773; and John Russell, b. 7 Sep 1775. They very likely could have remained in the Cheshire area and had children. Sorry, I have no further info on those branches of the family. -Jim

Would you have any other information on other family members for your Russells in Cheshire? I have been told that my great-great grandfather Charles Russell was born in Cheshire sometime in the early to mid 1800s. I'm sorry I don't have an exact date. But he married a Georgianna Sherwood, whose mother came from Scotland. Charles and Georgianna had at least one daughter. My great-grandmother Angela Georgia, born in 1863. Angela married Mortimer David Mitchell in 1890.

You have a great site! Could you please advise as to your source that Benedict and Catherine were married in New Haven, Connecticut? Any chance you have info on Catherine's maiden name and parentage? FYI, the Joseph living with Benedict and Catherine in 1850 is their grandson (Joseph, son of Amraphael and Matilda (Blanchard) Russell, born New Haven, Huron County, Ohio 6 Jun 1839). I think Catherine must have died prior to 1855, as the New York state census in 1855 has Benedict with wife Nancy, 2 step sons with a different last name (which I couldn't quite read, but is something like Conner) and a boarder. When Benedict died, in 1857, his wife Nancy was executrix of his estate, and he left some real and personal property to "my beloved wife Nancy". The Catherine Russell you located in the 1860 census doesn't exactly match age-wise, and I suspect is not the same one; however, I have been unable to find any death or burial info on Catherine. Just seems unlikely they would have divorced after being married for over forty years and having had five children together. Thanks for your help and interest! -Jim

Since I posted that message I have found census for Benedict. 1835 State Census at Leon, Cattaraugus, NY. 1840 US Census at the same place; the same place in 1850 listing Benedict, Catherine, John and Joseph. Then in 1860 after Benedict died, Catherine is listed in Smyrna, Chenango Co. I don't know where I got the name of Nancy, but I would guess that Benedict only had 1 wife and that he died before she did. My GrGrGrandfather was George D. Russell. I have not found their parents or siblings. Supposedly there were two brothers, David and John who originally came over from Ireland, and the only names that I have found in immigration records were a John and David who came from Ireland in 1747 on different ships and landed in Maryland at different ports. When I saw your information on the David Russell from Pa. with a son named John born in 1787, I thought this could solve my mystery. Do you have any more information about this family, like the descendants of the sons David and John?
