The following is a list of the known facts in an attempt to determine the parents of Elizabeth Rush, wife of Benjamin Fisher. 1. According census data, She was born in Ohio, and her parents were born in Virginia. Her death certificate give her date of birth as 3 April 1827. 2. She married Benjamin Fisher in 1846 in Cass Co., Indiana. 3. Benjamin Fisher and his family were all born in Franklin Co., Virginia 4. According to the biography of Joseph Fisher, Benjamins brother, which was published in 1887, in the History of Miami Co. Indiana, the family settled for a time in Preble Co., Ohio, before moving on to Indiana. 5. The Fisher were members of the Church of the Brethren. >From these facts, I formed a theory: Elizabeth and Benjamins families had known each other for some time. To test the theory, I made a list of all of the given names for Rush in the 1830 Census that matched given names for Rush in Virginia in 1820. There were several that matched. I also checked the 1840 Census for Cass Co. Indiana. The name John was the only name that met the criteria (I had narrowed the Ohio names to Preble Co., only) Following is the census records for a family of John Rush in 1830 & 1840. Males Females >5 5 10 15 20 30 40 50 >5 5 10 15 20 30 40 50 1830 Preble Co, 2 2 1 1 1 1 1840, Cass Co. 2 2 1 . This pattern is consistant with the theory. The Marriage Bonds of Franklin Co., (Winfields Works), list a marriage for John Rush and Elizabeth Peters, on May 2, 1814, This marriage date is compatible with census records. I would appreciate any further infromaton on this. Vern Turner Menlo Park, CA
