-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [GV] Quebec Canada Ship Arrivals 1909-1914, Germans from Russia index From: Patrice Miller <patrice@attbi.com> Date: Fri, June 28, 2002 11:46 pm To: GER-VOLGA-L@rootsweb.com I am thrilled to announce that the Odessa Digital library has added another huge Canadian ship list index to their website. Germans from Russia Arriving at the Port of Quebec, Province of Quebec, Canada 1909 - 1914 http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/ships/link/quebec2.txt George Dorscher (dorschet@cadvision.com) has spent numerous hours (I think this took him a year) indexing these Germans from Russia. Be sure to let George know if you find an ancestor on his index that you could not find otherwise. I found my grandfather on George's index. In fact George has indexed these other ports over the years: Halifax, 1900-1914 (G. Dorscher) Quebec, 1900-1909 (G. Dorscher) St. John, 1900-1909 (G. Dorscher) St. John, 1910-1914 (G. Dorscher) So if you had an ancestor that may have landed in Canada from 1900-1914 be sure to check his indexes. If you have ever seen Canadian ship lists the handwriting is particularly hard to read. So expect mispellings. Be creative when you search for your ancestors, try part of their surname, or first names, or even the destination. Two Volga villages that I know are well represented in George's ship list are Norka & Yagodnaya Polyana. I am sure there are many other others that I am not aware of. .......... The Odessa Digital library can be found at: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/content.html To search all the ship lists at one time start at the above page. Click on the blue button labeled Full Text Search. In the Data Category choose: Ship and Immigration Records Then enter either your surname, or the beginning of your surname follwed with a * (such as Mora* for Morasch), a destination (Calgary or 2 letter state abbrev such as WI), or a first name. Be creative and keep searching if you don't find them at first. Or browse the ship list pages individually at: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/ships/ .......... Canadian National Archives http://www.archives.ca/02/020202_e.html If you do find them on his index you can 1. visit the Canadian archives http://www.archives.ca/02/0202_e.html 2. Obtain a paper copy of the record from the archives http://www.archives.ca/02/020206_e.html 3. order a copy of the microfilm through inter library loan from the Canadian National Archives. I don't believe you can order them through the family history centers. You will need a roll number and roll title to order the microfilm such as Halifax ship list roll# T-498 1904 March 19 - 1904 Dec. 30 Passenger lists 1865 to 1922 http://www.archives.ca/02/020202/0202020401_e.html A list of all the rolls can be found here: http://www.archives.ca/02/020202/020202040103_e.html Patrice Miller
