Fort Morgan Times Fort Morgan, Colorado 02-19-02 NOTE: surname Schmidt Ray Van Winkle, 77, dies Monday, February 18, 2002 - Ray Van Winkle, 77, of Akron died Wednesday at the Sterling Regional Med Center. Van Winkle was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Washington County to Paul and Theresa (Rahaak) Van Winkle. He was raised south of Akron. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he served in the South Pacific until 1945. He married Aladean Schmidt in Akron on Sept. 5, 1948. He began working for Mayes-Beaven in 1948 surveying on oil exploration crews and in 10 years he worked in 10 states including Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, South Dakota, New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Louisiana and California. In 1959 he returned to Akron where he worked for the Town of Akron until he retired in 1987. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Henry, and two sisters, Pauline and Alpha. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Aladean of Akron; a daughter, Pam Cline of Lakewood; two sons, Randy of Castle Rock and Bill of Newman, Ga.; two brothers, Elmer of Akron and Ed of Junction, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Washington County Rodeo. A graveside memorial service will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the Akron Cemetery with Pastor Andy Taylor officiating.
