: Sunday Oregonian Newspaper 10-21-01 : : A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. Monday Oct.29, 2001 at Husteads : Mortuary in St. Johns for Emil Burback who died Oct. 21 at age 87. Mr. : Burback was born April 17, 1914 in Portland and was the son of Germans from : Russia immigrants, Jacob Burback and Christina (nee) Schlitt . As a child he : lived with his family in Colorado for several years until his father's death. : The family returned to Portland in 1926. He attended Highland Grade School : in Portland. He served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. Mr Burback : retired from Pacific Building Materials after a 25 year career and was a : lifetime member of the American Legion post 156 Souvie Island. : : Mr. Burback lived the majority of his years in the St.Johns area and could : often be seen walking, biking, raising the flag, delivering for Meals on : Wheels, shopping or running errands for elderly or disabled friends and : neighbors. He was generous with his time and those who knew him often : referred to Emil as "the Mayor of St. Johns." He was a wonderful man with a : great sense of humor and his presence will be missed by all who loved him. : : Preceeded in death by his parents and brothers, Conrad and William. : : Survivors include his daughter Diane Plew of Fairview, son Dennis Burback of : Vancouver, WA, grandchildren, Teesha Plew, Tiffney Plew, Ronda Caruso, : Craig Burback, Sheree Burback, Zac Burback, Taylor Burback and : great-grandchildren Jordan and Sophia, sisters, Christina Krieger, Florence : Carlson, Helen Wacker, and brother Eddie Burback. : : Private internment at Willamette National Cemetery.
