Hi, Cousins, Here's something else that was in the papers sent me by Dot DuMond. It is a letter she received back in June 1983 from the Erie County Historical Society ini Erie, PA. Our Society very much appreciates the book, "Some of the Ancestors and Descendants of Joseph Rudd, Jr. 1740-1818 and his wife Sarah Story 1744-1842" which you have compiled and edited, and which Mrs. Marilyn R. Peterson has given to our Library. I will acknowledge this gift to Mrs. Peterson. I have always been interested in the Rudd family settlement in Springfield Township of Erie County, Pa. This is our northwest Twp. bordering on the State of Ohio. Mrs. Peterson wrote first asking about Amasa Stewart and his wife Lois. None of us knew the maiden surname of Lois Stewart until last year Mrs. Garth Rudd [address in Colorado] wrote to ask us about Rudds in Erie Co. It was this Mrs. Rudd who told us that Lois was a Rudd. The Stewarts were always loyal Methodists and early meetings of the West Springfield congregation were held in their home. [This should interest Mary Ann Sibley, a descendant!] Mrs. Rudd's husband, Garth, is son of George Fred Rudd 1883-1970, grandson of Joseph Sidney Rudd 1860-1938, great grandson Erastus Harper Rudd 1817-1863, and great great grandson Erastus Rudd 1787-1834 and Experience Wheeler. He was Experience's second husband. The Garth Rudds are Mormons. Much of her information has come from a book called Rudd History compiled by Lucy Keller, a granddaughter of Anson Rudd and letters from Lucy Keller to John Randall Rudd, son of Erastus, 6th child of John Rudd, Sr. and his wife Chloe Hills. [Guess this proves the Rudd History Celia got from Rogue Valley Genealogical Society was Lucy Keller's!] John Rudd, Sr. did not have the first farm on shores of Lake Erie. Settlement began here in 1795 and the earliest pioneer in Springfield Township was Samuel Holliday who also settled at the Lake shore. Members of that family are still there. John Rudd had much more than 100 acres, parts of which he gave to his children: Cyprian 90 acres, Anson 60 acres, Rosanna Rudd (wife of John, Jr., and dau. Lyman Jackson 1756-1835, a Rev. soldier, settled Erie Co., but who had previously lived in Otsego Co., NY) 1782-1866 1 and 1/2 acres, Erastus 75 acres, Amanda Harper 25 acres (their daughter), her husband John Harper; one acre to Hugh Brooks Fletcher, husband of their daughter Tryphosa; to Tryphosa Harper 35 acres. After John Rudd, Sr.'s death Chloe deeded another 18 acres to Anson. John Rudd's original patent from the Commonwealth for 400 acres is in Deed Bk. 138, p. 45 and patent was issued 24 Sept. 1822 but not recorded at Court House in Erie until 6 August 1901. This land lay just east of the Moravian Grant but was not part of it. I was much impressed with your work and the amount of material which you have included, for instance all the records of burials in the various cemeteries. You might also be interested to know that last fall an Allan Hartshorne visited our Society in search of his Hartshorne relatives who had also settled at West Springfield, Joseph, Ebenezer, etc. If you have questions about the Rudds here I should be happy to try to answer. More good stuff to come! Joann
