I think it was Capt John Rudd 1643-46 of the Hopewell in our line - Virginia. Jonathan Rudd I believe came into CT int he 1500's with the Winthrop Fleet Mary Elizabeth RUDD Johns
Winthrop's Fleet made its largest trip, the one called The Great Migration, in 1630. There were other trips later that involved individual ships, but not the entire fleet at one time. I have 7 or 8 direct lines from my mother that were subscribers with the Fleet. There was much intermarriage the first 2 or 3 generations which is how I happen to have so many lines that were part of the group. Most WF descendents have a "troop" of ancestors that were with the Fleet. Not many stayed in the Boston area because there was not enough fresh water to support the huge influx of people. Many, most of my ancestors included, moved up to CT shortly thereafter. My ancestors mostly lived in the Greenwich area . Because Winthrop has such a huge influence on my heritage, I have done considerable research about him and his "followers". Most came from Co. Suffolk (his home) and Essex (the neighboring county), but not all. The point of all this is they weren't even thinking of the New World in the 1500s. With the trip occuring in 1630, very few of the adults were even born before 1590. I would like to expound on Ellen's commentary as my maternal roots begin with surnames Lathrop/Pratt and some Winthrops. My Rev. John Lathrop came in 1635 (he was b. 1584) to Mass. on the vessel Griffin (he was a Puritan and the crown was glad to be rid of his influence against the Church of England.) They left Barnstable/Scituate Mass. and settle in New London, CT area. Where I'm going with this is during researching these early New England settlers in my line, numerous Rudds appear in the town records and documents. Having the Rudd family in my paternal line made me hope they were connected BUT this is not the case unless someone has evidence from 1500's or earlier in England that the 2 John Rudd families and the Burlingham Rudd family, which seem to be the main 3 Rudd families being researched on this list, are connected. The earliest Rudds came in the wave of Puritans/Pilgrims in the time frame Ellen has referenced. Considerably later, a Rudd line comes to VA, both are John Rudds but have no proveable connection. Later still, Burlingham Rudd is sent by the crown to NC. I've had no problem keeping my line, which is Burlingham, apart from the New England Rudds, but it has been hard research for many since some of the VA Rudds end up in NC and SC among or near the Burlingham tribe.(and I can assure you, as can Linda Rudd and others, that unraveling parentage in the Burlingham tribe is a hard mission in and of itself...) I just didn't want to see confusion by new researchers on the list perhaps thinking that they needed to look towards New England if they are from the other 2 Rudd clans. However, if anyone on the list can enlighten us on any of the Rudd tribes BEFORE they crossed the pond, that might be helpful to all of us looking for the paternity of our first Rudd in the Colonies, especially in light of a John Rudd (not the VA family) who arrives in NC one year earlier than Burlingham Rudd (1727/1728 respectively). No proof that they are related, but I find it strange that this John Rudd arrives a year before Burlingham and comes to NC (as opposed to PA or New England if he had family already here), yet I have never seen inquiry or evidence of his line being furthered. Perhaps he died soon after, but it is possible that he increased his line and those descendants may have become intertwined in the Burlingham tree since Burlingham (how ever many of them there might be, 2, 3 or more) was traceable through documents and was in the same vicinity...one could easily draw a conclusion that by virtue of date and location, Burlingham must be the earliest ancestor. Much is coming to light that may make us question IF Burlingham is indeed the correct earliest ancestor to us. I'd love to see some dialogue from others that feel uncertain with the way their Burlingham or George L. Rudd tree reads...pardon the length, but wanted clarity that the CT/MA, VA, and NC Rudds are not related (to the best of our knowledge) to spare unwarranted searches of places where ancestors won't be found when the energy is best spent (especially in the Burlingham tribe) nailing down NC/SC/GA/AL and FL connections. Thanks for your patience and hope to see some lively exchanges on these elusive ancestors.
