Dear RUDD List, The following obituary was in the Rochester (NY) Democrat & Chronicle today. Judy Wells, Phyllis M. 10/21/2000. Phyllis Moody Wells, last surviving member of two of Lyons (NY) founding families, the Demmons and the Rices, died on Saturday, October 21,2000, in the Jennifer J. and Elizabeth G. Hildebrandt Center for Palliative Care at Genesee Hospital. Born in Lyons on November 3, 1916 to Bessie Rice RUDD and Andrew P. Moody, Phyllis grew up at 56 Butternut St., the home built in 1887 for her grandmother, the successful artist, Emma Rice RUDD. For a time, her family lived in Cuba, where her father was a sugar broker until the sugar market crashed and the Moodys returned to the Rudd homestead. On graduation from Lyons high school in 1935, Phyllis moved with friends to New York City, whre she met her future husband, Arthur Wells-Castillo. By the time of her death, Phyllis had been predeceased by her parents, sister Lewraine, ex-husband, and son, Jack. Phyllis spent most of her life as a resident of Rochester and enjoyed being involved with the community. She worked for a time at Stromberg Carlson, was a teaching assistant at Monroe High School, and was a generous supporter of the Genesee Hospital. Her favorite activities included local theatre, entertaining and travel. Phyllis was also an avid bridge player, and until recently had been a member of several Rochester groups. Phyllis is survived by many friends who enjoyed her great sense of humor and love of fun. A private ceremony will be held by friends. In liew of flowers, donations can be sent in memory of Phyllis to the Hildebrandt Center for Palliative Care at Genesee Hospital. Arrangements: J.H. Cameron Funeral Home, Scottsville.
