Hi, Ronnie, I'm sorry but I don't recognize any of your names. I am also sending this reply and your original message to the Rudd Mail List hoping someone on there might recognize your family. I am descended from Lt. Jonathan Rudd who came to CT, but there are other members on the list descended from a couple of lines who were from the southern states. We also have some on the list who are still in England. Good luck, Joann Nichols RRudd1818@aol.com wrote: > > I am searching for any relatives of my grandfather. Here are the references: "Records of the Rudd Family," Collected and Arranged by Mary Amelia Rudd, Published in 1920 in Bristol by J. W. Arrowsmith Ltd. This is a book mainly about the Rudds in England, but it does have chapters on Rudds in Ireland and America. The portion I have a copy of (thanks again Nancy!) covers the table of contents, the origin of the name, and the American Rudds. I'm sure it would be in many genealogical libraries. "An Irish Rudd family, 1760-1988: Rudd origins and other Irish Rudd progeny of Gordon Arthur Rudd and Alicia Wellwood, Rathsarn Parish, Queens Co., Ireland," by Norman N. Rudd; Mariam A. Rudd, editor Chula Vista, CA: Rudd Family Research Association, c1992. I called these folks about 3 years ago and they said that they had about 200 copies left at the time. Call (619) 422-4445 to get the information about buying the book (3 years ago it was $25 plus shipping) Another book I've come across but have not heard about on this group before is "From bloody blokes to Damn Yankees: Descendants of William and Rawes Rudd, Westmoreland Co., England," by Dorothea McReynolds Rudd 1991, Franklin, NC: Genealogy Publishing Service The address for Ms. Rudd is 448 Ruby Mine Rd. Franklin, NC 28734 I'd love to find out what this book is about. Hope this helps. Van Rudd Ann Arbor, MI
Hi, My great grandfather Sherman Rudd died in Starke Co., Indiana. I am not sure where he was born, but I believe he moved to Indiana from Salyersville, KY. If anyone knows anything about him, I would greatly appreciate the info. Thanks Karen Kaspar
Hello Van, There may well be some Catholic Irish Rudds but I haven't found any yet. The father of my Ireland -> Canada Rudd was a Church of Ireland minister, as were several of his relatives. Hello, English Rudd here. I am interested in the details of both books please. Particularly the latter. Thanks for this interesting posting. Hi Karen, I'm sure a number of people here would love to help, but I think most need some more information. What city/state(province?)/country did they live in? Do you have an approximate birth or death date? I don't personally have any of these names in my database but if you gave some of this info I'm sure someone here might be able to find something for you. Good luck searching, Van Rudd Ann Arbor, MI In a message dated 6/27/00 11:00:52 AM Eastern Daylight Time, KKaspar400@aol.com writes: > Hi, > I am trying to find the roots of my family. Hi, I am trying to find the roots of my family. If anyone could help, would be great. My grandfather's name is Orban Rudd wife is Anna Mullins. His fathers name is Sherman Rudd. that is all that I know right now. Do you or anyone know of them or their families. Thanks Karen Kaspar kkaspar400@aol.com
Hi again, With the help of a couple of lurkers on this list I have managed to piece together an interesting story relevant to the up coming Independence Day holiday. Turns out that my James Rudd of Maryland married the first cousin to Charles Carroll of Carrolton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. (James Rudd is my G-4-grandfather) The story isn't just the relationship however, turns out that the Charles was the only Catholic signer of the Dec. of Ind. and his cousin, John Carroll was the first Archbishop here in America. John put together a band of Catholic emigrants to go out west and settle in what was then, the furthest west, Kentucky (among other places). Springfield, KY was one of the towns where these settlers were sent and it is here that James and his wife Susannah Brooke settled. I have been informed that the St. Rose cemetery has tombstones for both James and Susannah and a number of their descendants. Obviously I'm going to have to make a roadtrip someday. So, not only is Susannah Brooke related to Charles Carroll, it is quite probable that the relationship is one (the only?) reason her and her husband emigrated to KY in the first place. History is far more interesting when you learn it this way, they should have kids do it this way in high school. Hope I didn't bore any of you with the story. Regards, Van Rudd Ann Arbor, MI p.s. I have no prior information about James Rudd. Like I said in my last post I'm half convinced he came from Ireland. Any leads would be appreciated.
Hi Rudds, Boy has everyone been busy, I hadn't checked the messages in awhile and I find over 100 postings! Lots of discussions on Jonathan, but also a lot on other lines which I like as I am also an orphaned line. My James Rudd shows up in Maryland in the revolutionary war time and emmigrates to Springfield, KY in 1796 where he is responsible for a lot of Rudd's in Louisville, KY and the surrounding areas. One interesting note about this James Rudd (and all descendents) was that he was Catholic. This leads me to believe that he might possibly be from Ireland rather than England, but this is pure speculation at this point. I do know that there is a book called "Irish Rudds" which details a fairly large linage of Rudd's from Ireland. A couple out in southern California wrote this book and if anyone wants more details, I'll look up the publishing and contact information (its self-published and you can call to get copies.) Anyway, another book that was brought to our attention by Nancy describes a root of the name Rudd in the Vikings who conquered and immigrated to the British Isles around 1000 AD. Again, its late, I don't have the stuff in front of me, but please ask if you are interested and I will dig up the relevant information. So my conclusion is that we are all from Ireland/England, but we are originally Vikings! How's that for covering all bases? Regards, Van Rudd Ann Arbor, MI
Hi, Rudd cousins and Dick Straw, Increase(6) Rudd and Lydia Cole are my ancestors. I have never been able to find her ancestry and have wondered if Cole is really her correct last name. They were married in 1801 in Middletown, Rutland Co., VT, both of Middletown, according to the town marriage record. The marriage was performed by Sylvanus Haynes. Dick, I believe we have corresponded before about our Lydia Coles. I have direct line from many CT. ancestors, this comes though my g-great mother Ethel Adelaide Lathrop . My direct Lines are, Huntington; Hyde;Abel;Fargo;Backus;Lee. My Aunt Adelaide Levis did a lot of research back in the twentys but there are holes of dates and places. I was able to verify the dates that I had from the ancestors list that Milt sent me . My biggest wall is my namesake Levis I cant get beyoned my gg-grandfather, Owen Sylvester Levis. I'ved strayed far from my intention of filling in the hole decendents of Nancy Rudd, Nancy Rudd +Elisha Huntington 5 Tabitha(Talitha ?)Huntington +Azarian Lathrop 6 Willis Azarian Lathrop 1826-1900 +Adelaide Augusta Hyde 1834-1920 7 Ethel Adelaide Lathrop 1857-1932 + Charles Wm Levis 1859- 8 Willis Slvester Levis Sr. 1885-1952 + Erma Gwendolyn Stingle 1894-1963 Willis Sylvester Levis Jr. 1922- + Marjory Louise Mason 1925- Love you cousins. Dot don't know where Celia is today but to order from Broderbund the addrees is: familytreemaker.com/welcome. good luck milton
Celia - I'm coming to the family "guru" once more, and perhaps others would like to know too. How do I order by computer for Broderbund? I've tried every- think I could think of, with no luck. I want to get these 2 C.D's, plus a listing of what else they might have that would help me at this point. Finally have the time to work on my own dead ends, and can't wait. Almost all of them are in the New England area. Again, thanks so very, very much!!!! Happy hunting. Dot DuMond
Sorry this is so late to the list. I finally had a few moments and dug out the following info from my stacks of unfiled stuff. I too descend from the Norfolk Rudds. I have a copy of 'The Complete Book Of Emigrants In Bondage 1614-1775' by Peter Wilson Coldham. It states that the following Rudds camne from England: Rudd, Burlingham of Poringland. S s horse Summer 1728. *Nf. Rudd, John. S Dec 1727. M. Rudd, John. S s linen at Winfarthing Summer 1769. Nf. Rudd, Timothy. S s watches at St. Nicholas, Worcestor, Lent 1767. Wo. Rudd, William. S Mar 1773. De. The abbreviations are: S = Sentenced to transportation s = stealing M = Middlesex Nf = Norfolk De = Devon Wo = Worcestershire * = found guilty of an offence for which transportation was a normal penalty So if I am reading this correctly, my Burlingham Rudd was found guilty of stealing a horse. The sentence was that he was to be transported to the states. Unfortionately, none of the above Rudds had ships that they came over on. I also have the intro part of this book which describes the process by which these folks were sentenced and sent over to the states. I would love to converse with someone and exchange information. Burlingham Rudd is the end of my information, and I would love to get info from England. Hi, Jane Jones, have you tried the Nottingham Rootsweb list? I have had great luck there, everyone's so helpful! There probably is a Rootsweb list for your other counties, too. Good luck, Meg Rudd
Would appreciate it if Betty Davis could look up(in both MA and Vermont) a David PIERCE b. around 1820. He married Caroline Wilson (b. around 1822 in NY) and their daughter married our Nottingham-born George RUDD in Cincinnati in 1869. Caroline was listed as a widow when she moved to Cinti. with her daughter so I believe David died in the east. I have had no luck finding information on David Pierce in NY around Rensselear County so I'm now guessing he might have been from over the state line. Thanks so much. Meg Rudd
