I just woke up...did someone say they had a Rudd ancestor related to the Burlingham line whose mother was born in VERMONT? Kevin.
Hey Shirley, Linda would make a great PI. I was looking over that family tree someone had sent you and am amazed at how many surnames that tree and my tree have in common. Can't wait to find out who Arthur's parents were, but I know he HAS to be part of my Rudds to live so close and have so many shared names in common. Also, notation for Linda (I had shared this with Gene a long while ago so don't know if you were aware): In a handwritten letter by my grandmother to a distant cousin, she (Eula Mae Rudd, dau. of Samuel Jackson Rudd and Elizabeth Craft) refers to her grandfather as ANDREW Seth Jackson Rudd whose first wife, Nancy was her grandmother, and that Grandfather Andrew Seth took Alice Craft, spinster sister of her (Eula's) mother, Elizabeth Craft (who was her father's 2nd wife), as his 2nd wife and they had 4 children of only 2 lived to adulthood, those being Fannie Rudd (Rutledge) and Winnie Rudd (Sammons).Andrew supposedly served Conf. in Civil War as did his son Samuel. I thought the use of the name ANDREW could be significant as the family Bible has only SETH written in it, but another distant cousin has affirmed that the name ANDREW SETH appears in her grandmother's Bible too. Seth and his son, Samuel both married twice having a set of children as young men with their first wife and a set of children as older (Sam was 60 when my grandmother was born) men with the 2nd wife...Sam had a 3rd wife after wife #2 died, but she was too old to have children. Had to make note of these things while fresh on my mind...sometimes have that CRS disease!!! LOL! Back to trying to piece together Linda's handiwork!!!! Hi Shirley, Linda, Janice and all desc. of Burlingham! Linda and I are in contact, the quandry is establishing paternity for Edward Burrel, Wm.Wesley, Arthur and David, the individuals described in Linda's earlier post. We know all these descend from Burlingham the first and probably from his son, George Lounsdale and after that, it becomes hazy. I know Seth is son of Elias David due to family Bible and legend. I have Burrel and Wesley in my tree as probable brothers of Seth (birthdates make it seem probable as does locale) BUT some elder family members say they "recollect tale" that Burrel and Wesley were Seth's cousins, as was his Seth's first wife, Nancy (dau. of James Rudd who is brother of Elias David Rudd) but they don't seem convinced that Wesley and Burrell were Nancy's brothers....however, if they were Nancy's brothers, it would explain their close proximity and sometimes actually residing with Elias David's family after the passing of James and his wife, Sarah Bowman. To further add to this quandry, we have Arthur and David Rudd living in close proximity approx. 1850, to Elias David and grandsons, such as Samuel Jackson Rudd (son of Seth and Nancy) in Gadsden Co., FL and Decatur Co., GA, which are connected to each other. My Rudd line (and Poston line) still occupy those 2 adjacent counties. The elder tells me (this is a 97 yr. old woman who actually knew some of these folks who lived to ripe ages) Arthur and David were from another bunch of Rudds that came to GA and FL later, which Linda seems to have validated in her extensive work. (note: the name Spears associated with Arthur is in my tree several times AND the Charlotte m. to David could be the widow of one of my Poston males, she was a Daniel or Daniels, as there are frequent Rudd/Poston marriages)I don't believe these 2 are sons of Elias David...their birthyears seem out of kilter with the others of Elias David and James. Could they be children of Geo. Washington Rudd (the first Geo. Wash. Rudd, as there are numerous others in post generations) or late in life children to George Lounsdale? I'm still digesting this new information, but it gives us all reason to go back to the drawing board....I want to stress how much I appreciate Linda's work because she has made headway where I had only dreamt of going. If anyone can shed some light or theorize or brainstorm, I know we would be delighted to get closer to the solution of this Rudd mystery! Just thought this would clarify what is being sought by Linda and the rest of us!!!! Whew, hope they all know what hard work has gone into tracking them down! Regards to all, Gloria Godwin (of course, I marry a man from a clan that had married into the Rudd clan some 200 yrs. ago...the families were connected all the way back to SC...small, small world, I just didn't realize this when we married) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hey Rudds Hey Linda, its going to be something when alot of the Rudds from Al,Fl,and Ga find out that theres alot more Rudds,lol...keep searching Linda,as I will. You are doing a great job.... Shirley
Hi! You would not believe just how many Rudd's are in the areas you listed. And...it get confusing somewhat. Which line from Burlingham are you?My line of research goes from Burlingham to George Lounsdale to Elias David Rudd to Edward Burrell Rudd to George Washington Rudd to William Penn Rudd to Harvey Rudd, the father of the friend I did the research for...from Burrell on down we find them in Geneva, Alabama and surrounding little towns down on the Florida line of Alabama. A really good source is to contact Curtis and Gloria Godwin at pogo@digitalusa.net . If you are on the same line as I have, then let me know and I will help you. For the other lines your best bet is the Godwins and also the Rudd Web Project, which they can help you get on. Good luck, Janice Jackson in Haleyville, Alabama. ----- Original Message ----- From: <LRudd71847@aol.com> To: <RUDD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 17, 2001 3:50 PM Subject: [RUDD] RUDD of SC > Looking to share information with persons researching the BURLINGHAM RUD(D) > lines from Anson Co. Is there a Alan Rudd out there that use to have email address that was rrudd@surfsouth.com? I emailed you at that address from a Rudd page, but it bounced back.I need to ask you a very inportant question about the Rudd family. Please email me and give me your addy,or answer here on this sight. Thank you, Best Regards, Shirley
Hello Donna and other listers, I too was surprised at the extent of your knowledge regarding the RUDD family Donna as I had found that the picture was rather confusing when approached from the use of the Census data for 1851 and 1881 mainly due to the great duplication of given names in different branches of the family. What I NEED to do is get down to the Norfolk Records Office and do some methodical checking of Parish records where they exist. The IGI has not been very helpful as the only RUDD event that it throws up is my grandfather's (George (Edward) RUDD) marriage to Hannah Martha Bunkell. If I can obtain a copy of his birth certificate it will enable me to make a bit of progress! George (Edward) RUDD had nine children who survived infancy, 4 boys and 5 girls. The Eldest son was Sidney George Rudd and he had 2 male children by his first wife Dorothy Loveday. There were no children with his second wife. He was divorced and both of his boys took their stepfathers name (KEYS) when Dorothy remarried. Gerald Keys(RUDD) was still alive in the 1970s but I suspect that he may have subsequently died though I have no proof other than the disappearance of his name from the telephone book! The other son was killed in an accident at the garage that he ran with his brother and mother in Blofield, Norfolk. The next eldest son was Herbert Rudd but he had no children. Albert Rudd had two girls only and they both married American Airforcemen and emigrated to the USA in 1946. George Rudd the youngest son had one daughter who married and emigrated to Toronto where she currently lives (Jennifer Wright, nee Rudd). I have had no contact with her since she was about 9 years old( she will be in her 50's now I think). My mother was her godmother but she virtually cut herself off from the rest of her family for reasons unknown to me. Of George Rudd's daughters only Gwendoline Page, nee Rudd, and my mother Gertrude Kendall, nee Rudd, had any children and then only one each! This means that the RUDD surname line has ground to a halt in our branch because George was the only son and his male children have failed to produce and/or retain the name! You asked where I am Donna - I now live in North Yorkshire about 200 miles from Norfolk so a trip to the old home area near Norwich has to be a bit longer than a day-trip! Roger Kendall
Hello Donna & Anthony, I believe that I have a strong probability of a common ancestor within the Rudd family that you listed Donna. My Mother is Gertrude A.V.Rudd aged 101 and still plodding on! Her father was George2 (Edward?) Rudd, born in Reepham c.1867 and married to Hannah Martha BUNKELL 1890. George, initially running a Grocers shop in Lakenham,Norwich in 1891, later having a furnishing business in St.Stephens St,Norwich, was killed in a road accident c.1908. George's siblings were Priscilla ROUSE (nee RUDD), Martha EARL (nee RUDD), Harriet ASHFIELD (nee RUDD) and Emily GEORGE (nee RUDD) George's father was also called George1 Rudd, lived in Reepham, Norfolk, with his wife Harriet (wifes surname unknown (but could possibly be SANDS) and coming from Kings Lynn according to the 1851 Census). My mother recollects spending the summer with relatives at Felthorpe near Reepham where she and her sisters spent the summer months with relations on a farm who "were very poor". She believes this enabled her father to give them money without it appearing to be charity! Incidentally Donna, in case you are not familiar with the area yourself, Reepham, Whitwell, Felthorpe and Aylsham are all within 5 miles of each other. According to my mother her grandfather George1 was a carpenter and his father was called John RUDD and his trade was Shoemaker. I wonder whether this could be the William John RUDD of your line? I have not been able to prove any of the family links so far since I have not been doing the research for long and have concentrated on my KENDALL/EYRE lines as these were much easier! Roger Kendall
