Celia-- Oscar Rudd is from my Illinois branch! He was the son of Erastus Rudd and Harriet Hill, and I have a picture of his tombstone from the Mound Cemetery at Joliet. He would have been a first cousin of Barak, Alonzo's dad. His brother Rossiter was keeper of the Mound Cemetery for many years, and was on the area school board. Hi Ceila,Joann and the R-Gang My husband's GreatGrandfather, Albert Delos Herrick, was also attached to the NYS 10th Vol, Heavy Artillery. He was with Company K, however: and he mustered in from Jefferson County. His unit was associated with the Battles of Cold Harbor, Wilderness, the seige of St Petersburg, Spotsylvania and others. I believe that he mustered in late in the War, after Gettysburg. I'm also thinking that if the Rudd's were in Company A--they must have been in from the get go. I have a pamphlet called 'Bugles Echo Across the Valley', which list Oswego county units of 24th,81st,110th,147th and 184th Infantry units and 24th Cavalry. This book lists a couple of sources that might be helpful. the Adjutant General's Office has a series of 43 volumes with thumbnail service records for each man. The Onondaga (Syracuse) and Albany libraries have a full set of Annual reports as these are called.(New York State of course) Two other books are Frederick L Phisterer's, NEW YORK IN THE WAR OF THE REBELLION,1861-1865, which are released in different year versions. If I get the time???? That never happens Vera Mae

Celia, I notice that an item in this info (Dewey Genealogy) reads that Joseph Rudd was engaged to be married to Sarah Wickwire. Information I have received shows that he married Sarah Story. Which is correct? An interesting note: I'm going to have to check my daughter-in-law's Dewey Genealogy...and also her Canadian Fairchild genealogy! Judy Offen
Hi All, I just joined the list yesterday. Here's my Rudd connection: My name is Sandra (Wilson) Holland. My parents were Herbert Wilson (b. 12-6-1916 Wolfe Co.,KY; d. 9-4-1986 Preble Co., OH) and Daisy Banks (b. 10-24-1926 Powell Co.,Ky; d. 8-1-1984 Butler Co.,OH) They were married 6-27-1942 Wayne Co., IN. My paternal grandparents were Willis Mann Wilson (b. 5-10-1893 Magoffin Co.KY; d. 11-22-1949 Wolfe Co. KY) and Mary Jane Haynes (b. 1-5-1897 Menifee Co. KY; d. 6-12-1986 Butler Co. OH) They were married 11-24-1915 in Wolfe Co. KY. My paternal great-grandparents were Eli Wilson (b. 12-24-1858 poss. Magoffin Co. KY; d. 5-24-1914 in Wolfe Co., KY) and Rebecca RUDD (b. about 1857 KY and d. after 1920 KY. I don't know where or when they married but I do know that Eli Wilson divorced his first wife, Mary Thomas, in Magoffin Co. KY in 1885. So the marriage between Eli and Rebecca RUDD took place after 1885 but before 1888 when their first son, William was born. On the 1920 Wolfe Co. KY census, Rebecca is listed as 63 and widowed, living with her son, Willis, his wife and two sons. I know absolutely nothing else about Rebecca RUDD. Does she possibly connect to any RUDDS that anyone is researching? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Sandy Holland Dayton, OH

That in Duxbury was conveyed Dec. 30, 1702, to Thomas Loring, and is described in the deed as being "all my farm in Duxbury about 80 acres and the buildings &c.," and this was probably the homestead inherited from his father, Stephen Tracy, who, in a document executed in London, Eng., March 20, 1654/5, empowering John Winslow to make a division of his estate in New England, directed that his son John should have what land and houses he had in Duxbury. This land was granted to Stephen Tracy by the Colony Nov. 2, 1640, and is described in the records as "80 acres of land with some meadow to it in Duxbury." Soon after the sale of his real estate Lieutenant John removed to Windham, Conn., where he died June 30, 1718. His son Stephen, born at Duxbury about 1673, married at Windham, June 26, 1707, Deborah Bingham, daughter of Dea Thomas and Mary (Rudd) Bingham. Deborah Tracy, daughter of Stephen and Deborah (Bingham) Tracy, was born at Windham, Conn., Jan. 8, 1714, married May 7, 1735, Increase Moseley. Two of Stephen Tracy's sons, James and Prince, were officers in the Frst Connecticut Regiment under Major-General Phineas Lyman in the campaign of 1755. Savage's Genealogical Dictionary. Tracy Genealogy, by E. E. Tracy, 1898. STEPHEN TRACY. BY JOHN GRAHAM MOSELEY. The earliest authentic record of Stephen Tracy that has been found is in the marriage records at Leyden, Holland, where it appears as number thirteen in the list, and last of the forefathers or of those who came over in the first four ships, "Mayflower," "Fortune," "Ann," and "Little James," and is as follows: "Intention published December 18, 1620. Married January 2, 1621. Stephen Tracy, saymaker, young man from England, accompanied by Anthony Clemens, with Trifasa Le ... maid of England accompanied by Pruce Jennings." "An old manuscript in the possession of Mr. A. H. Tracy, of Chicago, gives Stephen Tracy as a son of Samuel, a son of Sir Richard, and speaks of him as a cousin of Lieutenant Thomas." Stephen Tracy with his wife Trifasa and his daughter Sarah, born in Leyden, Holland, in 1622, came in the "Ann," Capt. William Pierce, to Plymouth Colony, arriving in the summer of 1623. Previous to 1623 all the products of the Colony, in accordance with a contract with the adventurers, had been turned into a common stock, and been distributed to the colonists according to their needs, but it was found that under this system there was not enough corn produced to supply their needs; consequently there was much suffering among them for a portion of the year, so the governor and leading men of the Colony, after serious consideration, decided to take the responsibility of allotting to each head of a family one acre of land for each member of the family to be cultivated for their own "particular." There being three members in the family of Stephen Tracy, he was that year allotted three acres of land on the south side of the town. May 22, 1627, he had shares for four heads in the tenth lot, in the division of cattle, having had a daughter (Rebecca) born in Plymouth previous to this division. In 1633 he was made a "Freeman of the Incorporation of Plymouth, New England." March 25, 1633, was rated for public use "18s payable in corn at 6s pr bushel," and was rated the same in 1634. This was as large a rate as was paid by any of the settlers. July 23, 1634, he was appointed by the general court one of the committee for laying out highways for Duxbury, and he probably became a resident of that town that year, and was one of its first settlers. March 3, 1634/5, was added to the governor and assistants "for the ceasing of men for the public charge of this present year." March 14, 1635/6, was appointed on committee of Duxbury to meet committee of Plymouth and together establish a line between the two towns, at the same date was assigned mowing land in Duxbury. Was constable in 1639, which at that date Winsor in his History of Duxbury says: "was an office of high trust and responsibility, and none were elected to it but men of good standing." Served as one of the committee of five for Duxbury side, to select a site for a meeting-house. Served as a grand juror in 1639, 40, 41, 42, and was arbitrator by order of the governor and assistants in 1638 and 1642. Nov. 2, 1640, was granted "80 Acres of land with some Meadow to it in Duxbury." He was frequently appointed on committees for assigning and laying out land. Was made a Freeman of Duxbury in 1646. He returned to England before 1655, for in Plymouth Colonial Records, Vol. 2, of Deeds, Folio 179, is recorded a Power of Attorney to John Winslow empowering him to dispose of his property in New England to his five children in that Colony. It is dated at London, March 2, 1654/5, he calls himself of Great Yarmouth, a seaport borough and market-town in Norfolk County, England. Historical Magazine, Vol. 3, Folio 261. It was formed on November 13, 1819, from the Western District and extended to the Mississippi River. It was named in honor of Col. Joseph Hardin. Colonel Hardin came from Roane County in 1815 with a grant for 2,000 acres of land for services as a colonel in the Revolutionary war. On the east bank of the Tennessee River, at Horse Creek near Savannah, he located his land, settled there in 1818 or 1819, and established the nucleus for the county soon afterwards named for him. His sons and daughters soon settled there as did the Brazletons, Goodens, Thackers, Courtneys, Garners, Dicksons, Dorans, Duckworths, Cherrys, Kincannons, Sloans, Williamses, Boyds, Wisdoms, Rosses, Shannons and others. The first Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was organized in January, 1820, by the following named magistrates: Isham Cherry, David Kincannon, James Barnes, Samuel Harbour, and Joseph McMahan. The first county officers were: Henry Mahar, ranger; Joseph McMahan, trustee; James Barnes, register; Stephen Roach, coroner. The commissioners appointed for the purpose located the county seat in the approximate center of the county and called it Hardinsville, later known as Oldtown, where the county government functioned until 1830, when it was moved to Savannah, then called Rudd's Ferry, and a log courthouse was built. This courthouse was soon replaced by a brick structure. The most outstanding event in the history of this county was the battle of Shiloh, or Pittsburg Landing, which was fought on the west bank of the Tennessee River on April 6 and 7, 1862. The National Cemetery is maintained at Pittsburg Landing and the Shiloh National Park, consisting of several thousand acres, in charge of DeLong Rice, is one of the most attractive and well kept parks in the nation. ------------------------------------------------------------ Hendricks County, Indiana Index to Marriage Records M-Z Book 1 Vol 3 1823-19 Rudd Virley R/Bertha M Tincher Dec 23 1900 12 297 Rudd Virney R/Charlotte E Ensminger Dec 23 1906 13 238 Rudd Orpheus C/Anna L Hastings Oct 11 1890 10 509 Rudd Virgie/Everett M Garrison Dec 29 1900 12 303 Rudd Mary Ann/Samuel S Trester Oct 31 1869 7 206 Rudd Motton E/Lydia J Osborn Aug 28 1890 10 491 Rudd John H/Nancy A Herod Nov 3 1892 11 120 Rudd John H/Vaudy King May 4 1898 12 63 Rudd James H/Emily Casner (???) -- (???) 5 175 Rudd John/Nancy M Crews Oct 12 1865 6 393 Rudd Cyrus R/Alice Wright Jan 25 1896 11 434 Rudd Gabrial/Louella Kendall Sept 28 1895 11 399 Vineyard Thomas/Nelly Rudd July 13 1848 4 8 Vandy King/John H Rudd May 4 1898 12 63 Trester Samuel S/Mary A Rudd Oct 31 1869 7 206 Tincher Bertha M/Virley R Rudd Dec 23 1900 12 297 Smith Oscar/Zula Rudd June 10 1896 11 464 Rudd Zula/Oscar Smith June 10 1896 11 464 144 Rudd Nelly/Thomas Vineyard July 13 1848 4 8 Rudd John/Sallie Lasley Jan 18 1866 6 432 Osborn Lydia J/Morton E Rudd Aug 28 1890 10 491 -----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Cousins! This is the first of several emails passing along the info I extracted from a search of the RUDD surname at Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Library. In the extracts, a line of dashes separates each reference. Celia THE SALISBURY ASSOCIATION, INCORPORATED THE SALISBURY ASSOCIATION, INCORPORATED exists because the public spirited citizens of Salisbury, Connecticut believed that various kinds of work making for town improvement could be done more effectively, and with less friction and misdirection of energy, by a business-like organization, than by the occasional efforts of small groups of persons. To put it concisely, The Association stands for co"peration in all civic matters that may properly be fostered by it, without duplicating or interfering with the activities of other existing organizations that are necessarily more limited in their scope. The Association was incorporated, without capital stock, on August 23, 1902, and in the language of its corporate certificate, as amended in 1913,--"The purpose or object of this corporation is to generally further the best interests of the Town of Salisbury and to protect and develop its natural attractions; and to hold and conduct carnivals, fairs, athletic competitions, and horticultural exhibitions, competitions and meetings." In July, 1903, a very successful "Old Home Week" celebration was held under the auspices of The Association, at which time over a hundred persons became members of it, most of whom have retained continuous membership for the past ten years. >From time to time The Association has subscribed to various public improvements, and in the early years of its existence set out over five hundred shade trees along the town highways. On September 1, 1913, The Association's first Fair, consisting principally of agricultural, horticultural and domestic exhibits, was conducted at Salisbury Center, and aroused a spirit of friendly competition that will surely result in the gradual improvement of all kinds of agricultural conditions in this locality. On account of the general interest shown in the Fair, both by exhibitors and by four to five thousand spectators, it will be held again in 1914. The increase in membership has been so great during the past six months that 477 persons are now enrolled; 262 of them live in the Town of Salisbury and the other 215 represent twenty-two states of the Union and one foreign country. Although The Association's chief dependence is on its local membership, it can only attain its maximum strength by being a country-wide Salisbury society, as well. In the past, Salisbury has been the mother of towns, and has given of her best to Vermont, New York, Ohio and the West, and there are hundreds of people of Salisbury origin, living elsewhere, who still think of her with interest and affection. To all these, membership in The Association, entailing as it does an almost nominal pecuniary obligation, cannot be other than a social bond, enhancing in many ways the pleasure of occasional visits here, and renewing, by proxy, personal activity in behalf of the Town and its people. There are too, aside from sentiment, material reasons for joining The Association. Each member is entitled to free admission to the Fair, and also receives a copy of any publication issued by The Association. The Association intends to issue, annually, a volume similar to this one, so that, in the course of a few years the original sources of town history will be in print, and conveniently accessible. This work is of great importance as the original records whether in manuscript or on stone are liable to damage or loss, and the only sure method of preserving them for posterity is to place printed duplicates of them (so far as the data is concerned) in many hands, as speedily as possible. The fiscal year of The Association commences on October 1st, and the membership fee for one year is $1.00, paid in advance. Men, women and children everywhere, who have an interest in Salisbury and its welfare, are cordially invited to join The Association, which is unique in its inception and aims, and absolutely unhampered by "red tape" or self-interest, either in the acquisition of members, or in the administration of its affairs. The congressman from Ohio, 1841-1845, Ezra Deane, born in Hillsdale 9 April, 1795, died Ironton, 1872, was anephew of Gaius and Rhoda Deane. The notes have been furnished chiefly by Mrs. Alice E. Pray of Albany; in part by M. D. Rudd of Salisbury, Connecticut. There is a volume, The Genealogy of the Dean Family, by Arthur D. Dean, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, but this gives nothing about the descendants of James Deane of Taunton, although the author establishes, as he thinks, that this James was son to Walter of Taunton. The Vital Records of Salisbury have b een published by the Historical Society. 2 Respecting the English origin of Joseph Parsons: 1. Colonel John Pynchon so calls him in his ac One recorded fact shows that his business burdens did not prevent John Deane from taking a becoming interest in the perplexities of his country; for in the calendar of the William Johnson Mss. is listed under date of 1 March, 1770, a letter from John Deane and others of Spencertown, recommending officers for the Spencertown companies and for field officers of the regiment. His long and busy life came to an end in 1793; the date is copied from his tombstone in the Austerlitz burying ground by M. D. Hi R-Gang Cousins! Today, I subscribed ($39.99/year if you sign up before 8/1) to FamilyTreeMaker's Genealogy Library and did a search for RUDD. It returned 61 different books with references to the name Rudd. As you can imagine it took some time to go through each one, but I did and I've copied and saved the information found. I will be posting it to the list as I have time. For now, Celia
Celia, Thanks so much for all you do. The info on my line, you can go ahead and make copies of now, while you have access to the copy machine. Seems to me there was info on Johnson and Abigail Brown Rudd and Erastus and Harriet Hill Rudd. That info I surely will want. I'll try real hard to look over your info list tomorrow or Monday. That way I can get out of your hair. Thanks again and again, Nancy
Hi Nancy and R-Gang Cousins, I've finished photocopying all of the requests I received. I did make some extra copies of most of the newest stuff in case there were any more requests. I'll be getting the boxes and packages ready to mail, hopefully, this next week. I'm on vacation for the next two weeks - hoping to get some database entry done! So, Nancy, send me your requests in September and I'll do the best I can. Unfortunately, I will no longer have access to a photocopier at work after the second week of August. The Hartshorn reunion sounds great (I received my notice today), but a little out of my price range for now. Joann, Thanks for providing the info on the Hartshorn Cruise. It indeed sounds tempting! I will subscribe to the mail list (thank you, Janet, for the mail list address). I'm grateful to all of you cousins who continue to provide data for our records. I wish I had invested in computer paper and toner companies! Judy Offen
Well the cruise sounds great, but too rich for my blood -- take pictures, get names and share with those of us who aren't able to make it. Sounds like alot of fun ! Mary Elizabeth
Hi, Janet, The info didn't come as a result of the mail list. See my message to Judy about it. Hi, Nancy and Sherry, Welcome back, Nancy. Sherry, since Nancy already seems to have this info, it's not necessary for you to look it up unless you want to do it. Everyone will need to take this info with a grain of salt, as the Mary Metcalf who has been claimed to be Jonathan's wife has been ruled out. Keep busy, Nancy! Sounds as if you are!
