I am with Doris. My family (from Wisconsin and California) and my husband's family (from Ohio and up state New York) all called our parents aunts and uncles "great" and not grand. When our nephew had their first child, he called and said "Congratulations, you are a great-uncle." My husband's reply "I've always been a GREAT uncle." Which our nephew agreed was true. I can see the connection between granduncle and grandparent, but guess everyone just always thought great sounded better or something. I've never known anyone who called their relatives grand___. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, but we've lived in seven states and 10 cities, north and south, so one would think we would have heard it somewhere. Interesting how things evolve over time. I really enjoy getting information from this site. I've never made a family connection directly through the site, but still find the history of the area that people share very interesting. Paula
