It seems to me most everyone came from North Carolina as did my ancestor's. I wonder if this could be because of the war of 1812? I read this somewhere: In 1804 the Indians ceded the land at Vincennes , IN . In 1806 that land came into possession of the settlers. A land opening started about 1822 in Terra Haute, IN . Preference was given to soldiers of the 1812 war. In the 1830's the railroad land in Indiana and Illinois was opened by land lottery to men who had fought or to their sons or to fhose who's fathers were farmers and had no slaves or little wealth. Veterans were sometimes paid in land warrents instead of cash."
