Dear Penny, Have you seen the two most recent issues of the Journal of the Rowan Gen. Society? There are articles/listings of Smith/Schmidt information (too long to type up) and I seem to recall mention of a James Smith, but I don't remember the dates. Perhaps there are lots of Smiths with the first name James in that early period. It seems to me I have read that you can purchase copies of these journals for about $7; check the Society's web site.
