One of my grandfathers of the late 1700's, early 1800's was a constable in Newberry SC. This job ruined him financially. We don't know how, but during research in court documents of the period for other areas, I have often seen entries concerning posting of security for individuals by different constables. No amount was under 500 dollars and many over 1,000. What was the benefit to the constable to put his money at risk? Was it his money? Very curious. If anyone knows, please explain to us or direct us to a source for answers to these questions.
