David - I am certainly no expert on Germanic given names -- hopefully one will also answer your post <gr> --- but this ancestor had been in the 'US' for a while. This would, basically be pronounced 'Weller', I believe. Perhaps a phonetic spelling of a variant on mom's or grandma's maiden name? Probably wrong, but just an idea. Linda
