    3. If the head of the household was out of town on census day, was his/her name included in the census at the home county location? In order words, how did a census taker handle a family member who was traveling or away from home temporarily? I have also wondered who in the household would be in a position to give census information to the census taker, assuming that the farmer was in the field at that time or the shopkeeper at his shop during business hours. Guesswork by a family member would certainly account for inaccurate information on ages, places of birth, etc. I know in the U.K. census reports, when a family member was away from home, he/she was not shown in the home location but would be picked up at the address of temporary residence and shown as a traveler/visitor.
