According to the North Carolina Gazetteer by William Powell, the following place names start with Angola, which could have been misinterpreted: Angola-community in western Onslow County Angola Bay-pocosin in southern Duplin and northern Pender counties. Angola Creek-rises in Angola Bay in northeast Pender County and flows south into Holly Shelter Creek. Also: Angelico Mountain-southwest Cherokee County extending northeast from Angelico Gap to Bowman's Gap (see also Rocky Face) Angelico Gap-southwest Cherokee County at the southwest end of Angelico Mountain.
