Amaziah Read is said to have been baptized 14 August 1752 probably in North Yarmouth, the son of Bartholomew and Mary (Harris) Read, and was descended from the the Read family of Salem, Massachusetts. I am compiling a book on the first five generations of that family that will be published by Newbury Street Press of the New England Historic Genealogical Society next year some time. The records of Weld Maine say he was born in 1764 and his widow claimed he was born in 1766 in her pension application, but those dates would probably make him too young for his service in the Revolution. He did marry twice, Rhoda Delano in 1785 and Jedidah Bumpus in 1809. He died in Weld, Maine, in 1833. Zebulon Read was born 27 March 1765, probably in North Yarmouth, the son of William and Mary (Tuttle) Read (see NEHGR 98 (1944):207 and the 1861 History of the Reed Family. Some have concluded that William was also of the family of Thomas Read of Salem, but I have concluded that is not likely. This Zebulon married Anna Merrill at North Yarmouth in 1790. She died there in 1811 and Zebulon married second Thankful Winch in 1811. Zebulon died at North Sharon, Maine, 7 May 1844. I have record of anyone in either family moving south, but have not attempted to trace beyond the fifth generation. Such movement was very rare since New Englanders felt that the South was not healthy. Richard H. Benson
