FORWARDED FROM REED-L MAILING LIST From: "David Cagle" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Date: Sun, 11 Jan 2004 12:55:10 -0600 Subject: Re: [REED] Zebulon Reed, 1774 MA-1850's TN Janice, I have had one other response that provided virtually the same information that you gave--I have copied same below. All this looks very promising. Ron Stricklin, who is tied to several of my lines, is descended from another set of Reeds here in Hardin Co. who may be related to my Zebulon Reed? Recently I have corresponded to yet another Reed researcher, Sheila Schweitzer, who also had a Zebulon Reed born 1776 in Massachusetts, then moved to NY ca 1815, was there for the 1820 census then died or disappeared. Her information is on Ancestry.com. She and I concluded that this was probably not my Zebulon. (Correspondence form Ron) I have been away on vacation for the last couple of weeks but after our last correspondence was working on the Reeds just before I left. I think I have found Zebulon Reed born 30 May 1774 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA to Ezekiel Reed and Mary Rogers. Ezekiel was born 14 Nov 1722 to John Reed, which might explain Hardin County Zebulon naming a son John Rogers Reed. I also found a Zebulon Reed in 1790 North Yarmouth, Cumberland Co., ME, about a hundred miles north of Bridgewater, curious mostly because on 1 July 1785 in North Yarmouth an Amaziah Reed was married to Rhoda Delano. This Amaziah Reed was born in North Yarmouth in 1766 to David H. Reed and Lydia Bartlett, and Hardin County Amaziah Reed named his first daughter Lydia in 1829. The 1820 Cumberland Co., ME census page 477 lists Zebulon Reed still in North Yarmouth. Another site has an Amaziah Reed born 2 May 1764 in Weld, ME, married Jedidah Bumpass and had children Amaziah Jr. (birthdate unknown), Rhoda (27 Sep 1803), Stephen (19 Jul 1805) and Huldah (12 Jul 1807), all born in Maine. Curious that Hardin County Amaziah Reed, born 6 Sep 1801, fits the birth pattern for this Amaziah, Jr., but he was supposedly born in North Carolina, not Maine. Still another site concludes that there was only one Amaziah Reed who first married Rhoda Delano and produced several children including David and Bartholomew and then married Jedediah Bumpass and generated a second familly. This site mentions descent from "the Salem Reeds". Wayne Co., TN John Reed, born 19 Jun 1774 and married 1801/5 Rowan Co., NC to Lydia Hollis, is said to be a son of Eldad Reed and Jane Whitaker. Eldad Reed, born 1737 in New Jersey and died 1806 in Fairview, Buncombe Co., NC is said to be a son of John Reed, born 1710-1715 in New Jersey Settlement, and Hannah Davis, who moved to North Carolina about 1755. On the 1759 Rowan Co., NC tax list is Samuel Reed, Jr., William Reed, Eldad Reed and John Whitaker. Finally, on 21 Jan 1885 in Mecklenburg Co., NC "Amzi G. Reid, Esq., aged 57 years, 8 months and 21 days, died at his home near Matthew's Station". And in 1891 & 1892 Amzi Reed was listed in a city directory for Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC. Mecklenburg County borders Rowan County to the South. No conclusions on all this yet, just seems like more than coincidence and that the Hardin and Wayne County Reeds may have come from New England by way of Rowan and Mecklenburg Co., NC Ron Stricklin [email protected] Ezekiel Reed 14 Nov 1722 - 1763 buried at sea, s/o John Reed and Mary Wheeler/Whitmarsh Hannah Beal[e] 31 May 1725 - married 25 Sep 1742 1 Ezekiel Reed 3 Mar 1744 Abington, Plymouth, MA - 12 Apr 1830 N. I have checked Jacob Whittemore Reed's book History of the Reed Family in Europe and America, there are a few Zebulon but the one that seems to fit your timeframe is on page 380 and he is the son of Ezekial Reed, born in Abington March 3,1744, who married 2 April 1768 to Mary Rogers of Marshfield MA. They had the following children: Polly b.1769; Zelotes b.1771; Ezekial b.1772; Zebulon b. 1774; Hannah b. 1776; Olive b. 1777; Jesse b. 1778; Charles; Abraham; Briggs Rogers b. 1784 (these last 3 seem to be triplets). > > Unfortunately, there is nothing further on Zebulon.
