Greetings list, I am back on the list after a long absence and am hoping you guys will be "my lifeline" and provide some clues to aid me in the so far fruitless search for my Hughes line. John HUGHES listed below is said to be born in Rowan County, NC. - Rev. War Pension Abstracts; John Hughes, s1536, North Carolina Line. Also served in St. Clair's defeat. Applied 9-05-1832, McMinn County, Tennessee, age 80. He lived in Burke County, North Carolina at enlistment and later moved to Blount County, Tennessee, then to McMinn County, Tennessee. Rachel BLEVINS was a witness. I thought he might be connected to my James Hughes as both he and John are shown on the 1830 McMinn Co. Census. My James Hughes has a son Caleb Starr Hughes who I thought was possibly named for Caleb STARR, a man of note among the Cherokee. Also his son Meredith Childers/Childress Hughes had a large contingent of Indians come to visit him in Clay County, Kentucky after he moved there. Notice that the first few children were born in South Carolina and James' wife was born in Georgia. Later, his son says in a census record that his father (James) was born in N.C. and there have been hints that it was Rowan County. Anyone have any ideas on this? After 20 years of research, I am at a dead-end. I am so tired of being kept awake at night trying to figure this out. Please help if you can. My line: James and Margaret HUGHES. Believe he or Margaret are Cherokee connected. They left McMinn County, Tennessee in 1835 for Kentucky (they are shown on the 1830 McMinn Census). 1.
