The 1778 Rowan County, NC Tax List for Captain Morris District, East side of Yadkin (River) shows the following people (among many others) as?owning taxable property in this area: Edward McGuire Henry Strange John Strange Andrew Merrill John Merrill James Smith Thomas Smith Anne Smith Daniel Smith Andrew Smith Joseph Smith John Gano, Noted Baptist minister buried in Kentucky NOTE:? John Gano visited the Jersey Settlement in Rowan County, NC several times between 1760 to 1784. (Garland A. Hendricks, "Saints and Sinners at Jersey Settlement, The Story of Jersey Baptist Church") It appears that this Captain Morris District?of 1778 was located somewhere near the Jersey Settlement area of Rowan County.? There were no Luckey or Luckie families listed as living in this?Captain Morris District?in 1778.? There was also no listing for a James McGuire listed in the Captain Morris District in 1778. Just because two people have the same surname and even when they lived in the same state and county, it doesn't necessarily mean that they were related to each other.? There were two totally unrelated Smith families who lived in Rowan County during the same time period, one was the German Smith's (Schmidt)?previously from Lancaster County, PA and the other was the English Smith's previously from Hopewell, NJ who were among those in the Jersey Settlement. Hi Linda, Thank you for this great clue.? If these people lived in the same district, Isabelle's last name does point to "Strange".? It would be great to find a will or a deed listing Isabelle McGuire.? Debra do you have access to Abstracts of Deed Books for Rowan NC?? Maybe we can look in the books and find Isabella's father leaving her something.? Several of Edward McGuire's daughters married a "Smith" - Hannah married John Smith, Sarah married George Smith, and Rachael married Philip Smith.
