    3. I have so many dead ends in Rowan Co. in the 1800 and earlier period, I wonder if a trip to the State Archives in Raleigh or the Rowan history room would be most profitable for research. Do the state archives duplicate the records still held in Rowan? Do state records have material that would not be held in Rowan? I do have some deadends in other NC counties also, and I thought maybe a trip to state archives would cover all this research at one time. I might add that Raleigh is closer to me than Salisbury, Rowan Co. Betty Pace

    3. Betty, Thank you so much for all your input to this list. You have helped me many times. I shouldn't be giving advice since I have not been to the NC Archives, but it is not because I have not wanted to go. Several folks that have been there many times have told me recently that there is much to be found that is no longer in the counties, or that has never been in the county. I plan a trip there soon myself if health allows. I have been to Salisbury and the Rowan County Library there is fantastic due to the many records and resources and private files. They are one of, if not the best. Searching at the courthouse and the register of deeds there leaves a lot to be desired from my point of view. I have roots in Rowan and recently was able to get beyond one of my dead-ends there by ordering every will and all estate papers for all the folks with the surname of RICE. And then someone from the Rowan list told me about a book on the history of Unity Presbyterian Church in Rowan which has so much genealogy information and helped me a lot. If you live in NC, I'm sure you know how simple it is to order on-line from the archives. Most documents are only $2.00 which includes searching and copying. If there are a lot of pages to copy, the fee is a little more. Turn around time is about 3 weeks total. Peggy Crane Caldwell County NC -----Original Message----- From: Betty A.
