I have found in 1860 census, Guilford Co, Greensboro P.O, South division, page 69, Jno ROSS age 14, b NC, living in house with G.Y. BRIDGES age 30, b NC, and Mary C BRIDGES age 30, b NC. J.F. ROSS age 25, store clerk, is listed On page 602 of the 1870 NC, Rowan Co, Salisbury, he seems to be one of many living in what appears to be a hotel. The start of that household, has listed as his occupation, Keeps "Mansion House". Your John F.M. may have been named John Francis Marion. There are a lot of William Kimballs, various spellings on 1880 census on familysearch.org, as there are a lot of John ROSSes. Good luck.
