    1. [ROWANROOTS] LONG, ADAMS, SCHMIDT/SMITH Families
    2. I was wondering if I could possibly get some help from all of you excellent researchers on here with some speculations that I have about some of the following families and any possible connections and/or relationships they may have had with each other. Does anyone know of any connection between John LONG or his son Alexander LONG and the John and Eve SCHMIDT/SMITH ADAMS family or Eve’s father Peter SCHMIDT/SMITH? Also, does anyone know if John LONG of Rowan County, NC may have been German? According to information found in Robert W. Ramsey's "Carolina Cradle", John LONG removed to Rowan County, NC from Earl Township, Lancaster County, PA about 1757 where he purchased a 620 acre tract of land between Grant's Creek and Crane Creek. According to A history of Rowan County, North Carolina, Families living on the Yadkin River One hundred years ago, John LONG owned between 2,500 and 3,000 acres of land in Rowan County. This book also states, “Alexander LONG was probably the only child of John LONG, was born Jan. 16th 1758, and became heir to the vast area of fertile lands entered and purchased by his father.” Peter SCHMIDT/SMITH and family along with son-in-law John ADAMS, his wife Eve SCHMIDT/SMITH ADAMS, and two of their children, John ADAMS (b. 29 Jan. 1752) and probably Barbara ADAMS (b. about 1754) also removed to Rowan County, NC from Earl Township, Lancaster County, PA by 1755 when both Peter SMITH and John ADAMS show up on the 1755 Taxpayers List in Rowan County, NC. John and Eve SCHMIDT/SMITH ADAMS had three more children born in Rowan County, NC, George ADAMS (b. about 1756), Peter (B.F.) ADAMS (b. 11 Mar. 1759), and Susanna ADAMS (b. about 1761). John ADAMS was born 29 Jan. 1752 Lancaster County, PA. (Source: Pennsylvania Births, Lancaster County 1723-1777, Page 75) In the Rowan County, North Carolina, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1768-1772 Volume 3, page 195: 9 May 1770, John Adams, 18 years and 3 months, orphan son of John Adams deceased be bound unto Paul Rodsmith for two years and nine months. Rodsmith is to teach him the art and mystery of a blacksmith. The estimate of George ADAMS birth year being about 1756 is based on the following apprentice bond for George ADAMS in 1774 when he would have been about 18 years of age and since George's older brother John ADAMS who was born in 1752 was bond as an apprentice in 1770 when he was 18 years of age. Rowan County, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1773-1786, Vol. 4, p.49: 3 Nov. 1774, George Adams an Orphan be bound to James Hendricks to learn the Art and Mystery of a turner and wheelwright. Alexander LONG's, son of John LONG, first wife's given name was Susanna according to land records in Rowan County. I have not found any records giving a maiden name for Susanna LONG. What I am wondering is if Alexander Long's wife Susanna could have been John and Eve ADAMS daughter Susanna, born about 1761? Does anyone on this list know of a marriage record for Alexander Long and Susanna (?) or for Alexander and his second wife Elizabeth, possibly Elizabeth CHAPMAN? There are some who have Alexander’s first wife listed as Susanna STOKES, but they give no source for where they found this information. Note: I have found no marriage record for Alexander LONG in Rowan County, which leads me to wonder if he may have in fact been German as I suspect he was. Alexander LONG was guardian to my William ADAMS, grandson of John and Eve SMITH ADAMS and son of John and Wineford BUSSELL/BEFFLE ADAMS, after William’s father John ADAMS’ death about 1781. (Source: Petition for division of Land Feb. Court 1789 by William Adams, oldest male orphan of John Adams decd., and by his guardian, Alexander Long, saying John Adams d. 1781 intestate with 160 A adj. R. Brown, John Turner and others with his mother, Winney Smith receiving her dower interest in the property.)  If Alexander LONG was married to William’s fathers sister Susanna ADAMS, that would have made him William’s uncle by marriage.  Thank you in advance, I greatly appreciate any help that any of you has to offer.
