I have my mother's old research notes and they don't make sense to me. They read: " Rowan Co., NC, Salisbury District by Jo Linn White" Early Tn. Tax, Sullivan Co., TN. 1797. Names: Nathan Tenpenny, Gaither, John Burks - died in Sullivan Co and had son Samuel 2M +16, 1M -16, 1F, "Heads of Families in North Carolina' " I don't know what Sullivan Co., TN has to do with Rowan Co. NC. However, I would really like to have the correct information. If anyone recognizes this book will you please give me the correct title so I can try and find the book. Thanks Diane Miller
When Rowan County was formed in 1753, it encompassed the entire northwestern quadrant of North Carolina and included the territory that became Tennessee. I find some tax lists of Washington and Sullivan Counties (then NC, now TN) in Jo White Linn's book, "Rowan County (NC) Tax Lists, 1757-1800, Annotated Transcriptions" (published in 1995), but they are for the years 1787 and 1789 --not the date you cite. It is possible that the source you have came from either the "Rowan County Register" (a periodical published for many years by Mrs. Linn) or appeared in the "North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal." I believe the library in Salisbury, NC has all of Mrs. Linn's books as does the FHL in Salt Lake City (and probably other major libraries do too).
