Dear Listers: My STEWART research in Newberry, SC was immensely aided by the many source books published there, especially the Estate Abstracts and Cemetery indexes. Strangely, other than Holcomb's "Early Rowan" marriages, the names of published books about Rowan Co.have escaped my notice. I will greatly appreciate learning of those publications, specifically of scope before 1800, and agencies handling their sales. Dick Stewart Carefree, AZ

Since the query comes from a genealogist in Oceanside, CA which is near Carlsbad, I highly recommend that he call up the Carlsbad Public Library catalog and see what the genealogy collection has in the way of records for old Rowan Co., NC. Sometimes the court records and the probate records have been abstracted. If not, then, through the nearby Family History Center, perhaps one can order films of the appropriate court records. The FHL Catalog is on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Do a PLACE search on that catalog, and see whether there are filmed probate records for the appropriate dates. The Carlsbad Library has evening hours for those who work. It is one of my favorite places to research when I am in San Diego county. (Where the fires have been terrible for the past several days.) Susan, that could very well be that the surnames are spelled differently. Please tell me more about the Maggie of 1783 that I have found, you may be more on target. It has been reported that Elizabeth's father was Yerick Balthausr (George Baltus) Claver/Clever, yet I have not found the proof document. Nell in Ardmore, OK Are you sure that this isn't Craver - there were tons of Cravers in Davidson Co (which was Rowan Co. during 1790 time period) I have Craver ancestors and there are several Frederick Cravers and there is a William Frederick Craver who had a daughter Maggie Elizabeth Craver who married a George Beck but this is later than yours.......anyway I've never seen any Clavers in this area but there are tons of Cravers...... Susan Avery Winston-Salem, NC . . . . a note from Nell ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Nell, Well - I don't have any Maggies or Margarets born in 1783 in my records unfortunately. Nor are there any Yerick Balthausr Cravers in this line - of that I'm sure. I don't even have any George Cravers in the 1700s. The name of the father in fact now leads me to believe that this isn't part of the Craver line after all. The name Craver by the way actually came from the German name Graber or Graeber (Grave digger) but because the German G has a more percussive sound to it, some American scribe wrote the name down as Craver and for large parts of the family the name stuck. The Grabers first came to the area that is now Montgomery Co., PA (was Philadelphia Co. before that) and were members of the New Goshenhoppen Lutheran church. Andreas Graber and his wife Gertraut were the first to come to America and one of his 3 sons Phillip Craver came south to Rowan (now Davidson) Co. about 1770 or so - the Rowan Co./Davidson Co. Craver descendants all come from Phillip. His sons that we have documented were Michael, Jacob,, Phillip Jr., and Johannes (John) Thomas. This is the same time period in which your George Baltus would have been born and I've never seen any reference to him and he is not a documented son of Phillip. So I'm sorry to have led you astray - I now don't believe your family is connected to these Cravers - sorry I can't help you. Is there anyone on the list who is researching the FREDERICK CLAVER family? He was listed in the 1790 Census Salisbury Dist. My 3rd ggm was Elizabeth "Betsy" Claver who married George Beck, son of Davault Beck who settled in Rowan County and owned land 1767. Steve, There was no 'party' as such. Groups of people, most often families, made there way (after the Coxe landgrab) to Rowan County for cheap, unencumbered land, between 1735 and 1756 when the records of the Jersey Baptist Church commence; the Smith presence was there 'by 1748'. About half of the names on the New Jersey 'Fifty Men's [protest]Compact' ended up in the Jersey Settlement of Rowan County; the Smiths were on Swearing Creek. Check out the link Susan provided (but take along a few grains of salt for such things as the mistaken listing of a marriage between Thomas Smith 1677 and Rebecca Anderson 1699. More on that in the future, if needed). It's a worthy telling of the New Jersey to Jersey Settlement story. Steve, It is not the "Jarsey Settlement" but the Jersey Settlement as I said in my email. I don't think anyone has compiled a complete list but there is a list of many of the folks that came down from Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., NJ to Rowan Co. NC in the mid 1700s in the excellent article about the 2 communities and their connection written by Ethel Stroupe at the following site: http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/mckstmerjersey.htm I highly recommend reading it.
