Hi... I don't know either except back when they were living in Lancaster PA there was a Robert Luckie will. I have seen both spelling in NC also. I think back at that time some of them changed the spelling to be easier to be identified. I know in my Willson line my great grandfather spelled his last name Wilson which was different than the rest of the family. However the kids put the extra l on his headstone. In Jersey County there was an older man named William Luckey living with the Samuel Davis family. My Samuel Luckey married their daughter Mary. Several of these families all seamed to be kind of intertwined, such as Luckey, Davis, McGuire and more to be found. A large number of the earlier settlers in Jersey County IL were born in Rowan County NC. Karon "Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer". ~ William S. Hi... Thanks for the tips. I did know about James McGuire and my Joseph Luckey both moving to MO around the same time and living near each other. They also moved back to Jersey County around the same time. They both bought land in Jersey County in the same year. I made the connection with them being friends awhile back. My problem is Joseph disappeared before the next census year. From that point on it was always Esther and the kids. I assume that Joseph died or something but you know what they say about assuming. I know they both were born in NC. what I don't know is Ester's maiden name or who her parents are. or who is Joseph's parents are. I am thinking of the Samuel Jr. I have read a lot of those bios on the Jersey site, but every once in awhile I find one that did not know about. As in once I did a global search on the name Luckey and that is how I found the "James McGuire, Jr" bio and learned about Eleanor Luckey McGuire. My ongoing quest is to find out exactly who Joseph Luckey's parents were. and what Esther's maiden name was. Their oldest son Samuel that was born in MO. is my 2ed great grandfather. They list a Jane Luckey who married a John Davis? in 1829(both natives of Rowan Co NC).? It says they moved to Missouri (where your Samuel Luckey was born) then moved to Jersey County, IL.? This Jane Luckey might be a sister to your Joseph Luckey and aunt to Samuel Luckey.? If you can find a person directly related to Jane Luckey, they might be able to give you more clues about this family.? Here's the link.? http://www.rootsweb.com/~iljersey/OS/OS-DG.htm#DAVISJ I don't know if you know this but James McGuire, Jr. - son of James Sr. and Eleanor Luckey moved from NC to MO to Jersey County, IL.? His biography is listed in the web page too.? Your Joseph Luckey and James McGuire, Jr. might have moved in the same circles - they both moved to Jersey County IL in the 1830's. You probably have this.? The web page has Joseph Luckey's wife's cemetery record as "Esther Luckey April 20, 1803-February 20, 1883" ~Glinda ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever. Glinda and Debra, Here is some information that might help you in finding out what Edward McGuire's wife Isabel's maiden name was, was she Isabel Luckey or Isabel Strange? The 1778 Rowan County, NC Tax List for Captain Morris District, East side of Yadkin (River) shows the following people (among many others) as?owning taxable property in this area: Edward McGuire Henry Strange John Strange Andrew Merrill John Merrill James Smith Thomas Smith Anne Smith Daniel Smith Andrew Smith Joseph Smith John Gano, Noted Baptist minister buried in Kentucky NOTE:? John Gano visited the Jersey Settlement in Rowan County, NC several times between 1760 to 1784. (Garland A. Hendricks, "Saints and Sinners at Jersey Settlement, The Story of Jersey Baptist Church") It appears that this Captain Morris District?of 1778 was located somewhere near the Jersey Settlement area of Rowan County.? There were no Luckey or Luckie families listed as living in this?Captain Morris District?in 1778.? There was also no listing for a James McGuire listed in the Captain Morris District in 1778. Just because two people have the same surname and even when they lived in the same state and county, it doesn't necessarily mean that they were related to each other.? There were two totally unrelated Smith families who lived in Rowan County during the same time period, one was the German Smith's (Schmidt)?previously from Lancaster County, PA and the other was the English Smith's previously from Hopewell, NJ who were among those in the Jersey Settlement. I am not related to the McGuire, Luckey, or Strange families.
