    3. Thanks Jan for responding. That is what I have understood for children [Not having been raised Lutheran, of course...], but I am not clear about adults or converts?? Were there adults in your "Catechism Class" or was everyone close to your age? Did adults have a separate class? Would adults also have been required to attend class or just be confirmed or?? That is critical to this situation as I need to establish perimeters for their ages, which may separate them from other Davids and Elizabeths and also may determine which of my gf Balzer DOTTRO's wives was their mother!. 1. Re: [ROWANROOTS] executions....list of 12 men excluded
    2. Steve O'Neal
    3. The "battle of Almance" was a culimation of a number of years of unrest and angst among the population. Men in the counties of Orange, Granville, Rowan and others had formed loose associations to gather and talk about the injustices, waste and corruption of the the local county officials long before the 1771 battle. As early as 1767 or 1768, and possibly earlier, some of these men began calling themselves "Regulators", as they fully intended to regulate a number of injustices that they felt were being inflicted upon them in one way or another. In 1768, a series of distrurbances occurred. The Regulators generally viewed them as gatherings of citizens to protest and voice their conerns. The local crown officials considered them "riots" and issued arrest warrants in some cases. I believe all of the 12 men listed on the 1768 Pardon list, along with others, were arrested (or at least warrants were issued) and charged with a variety of crimes, mostly having to do with rioting and unlawful assembly. After a series of sham trials, some where those accused were not allowed representation in the local courts, Governor Tryon began to sense that public opinion in some areas was beginning to turn in some areas IN FAVOR of these Regulators. To appease the masses, and to attempt to restore order in the backcountry, he issued the "General Pardon" to ALL who were involved with these distrubances in 1768, except the 12 men listed, who Tryon and his local officials felt were, at that time, major instigators of the Regulator movement. Some historians belive that Tryon was walking a tightrope between retaining the loyalty of his local officials (who he recognized were corrupt) - by excluding these "outlaws" from the overall pardon; and attempting to quell the building sentiment of the citizens of these counties - by pardoning the rest. So Tryon's 1768 general pardon had nothing to do with The Battle of Almanace. The 1768 Pardon and the acts that led up to it were a PRECURSOR, by a full 3 years, to the Battle of Almanace. joemcdo@flash.net wrote: Sorry about the last reply I misread the date as 1778. But with the date as 1768 I'm still confused. Why did Tryon make this list 3 years before the battle? 2. I don't know what happened with that last post, will try again... The men who were executed after the Battle of Alamance in 1771: James FEW ~ was executed west of Hillsborough, North Carolina on May 17, 1771, after taking part in the Battle of Alamance. James was hanged at the militia's camp approximately five miles northeast of the Alamance battlefield. Robert MATEAR ~ was not involved in the Regulator movement, but was accidentally caught up in Governor Tryon's revenge. He was hanged on 19 June 1771. Benjamin MERRILL ~ was a leader of the Regulator movement. He was hanged on 19 June 1771 for his involvement. Captain MESSER ~ was hanged on 19 June 1771 for his involvement. James PUGH ~ was a leader in the Regulator movement. He was hanged on 19 June 1771 for his involvement. Two "Unknown" Regulators ~ no one seems to know the names of these two men, they were also executed on 19 June 1771. ********************************************* The six men who were pardoned: William Brown ~ was condemned to death at Hillsborough for his involvement but reprieved. James Copeland ~ was condemned to death at Hillsborough for his involvement but reprieved. Herman Cox ~ was condemned to death at Hillsborough for his involvement but reprieved. James Emmerson ~ was condemned to death at Hillsborough for his involvement, but was reprieved. Forrester Mercer ~ was condemned to death at Hillsborough for his involvement, but was reprieved. James Stewart ~ was condemned to death at Hillsborough for his involvement, but he was reprieved. 3. The Ivy Mills book (see the other posting I just sent) says that Thomas Willcox (John's father) sold paper to Benjamin Franklin and bought supplies from him, so that is probably the connection. The Willcox family lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania (just outside Philadelphia). Elaine Oakes >>Hermon Husbands of Sandy Creek, Orange County, NC was reportedly related or connected with Benjamin Franklin. Husbands kept up a correspondence with Benjamin Franklin through John Wilcox, a merchant of Cross Creek, Cumberland County, NC who went to Philadelphia twice a year to buy goods.

    3. This John Wilcox is my gg...uncle. His sister Mary married John Montgomery. John's father was Thomas Willcox (the usual spelling was with two "l"s), who had one of the first paper mills in America. For more information, see "Historical Southern Families" Vol. I, "KENDRICK of GLOUCESTER CO., VA, and NORTH CAROLINA", by B. C. Holtzclaw, and "Ivy Mills 1729-1866, Willcox and Allied Families" by Joseph Willcox (1911), which is available on-line at HeritageQuest. John Willcox died in Richmond County, NC in 1793 so is only slightly connected to Rowan. Elaine Oakes >>I found the following?at Ancestry.com?in the "History of North Carolina, Chapter LXIII, Randolph County" where it mentions Herman HUSBANDS and John WILCOX. "Resolved, That the lands said to be the property of Herman Husbands, on which there is pit-coal, hearthstone, &c., be purchased or otherwise secured for the use of the public. "Resolved, That if John Wilcox and William England refuse to part with the mortgaged premises, it will be necessary to make a new agreement with them. "Resolved, If they will neither sell nor lease, that they be precluded from using any ore or timber from the vacant land of the State adjacent."

I have found a 25 marker DNA match between an English descendant and my Harrell line, some of whom settled in that part of NC. 1. Re: [ROWANROOTS] executions....list of 12 men excluded
    2. There was some kind of problems that Tryon had with the Regulators in 1768 also, I've read some articles about it.  The battle of Alamance was in 1771, I think it was in May but don't quote me on that.  Your Benjamin Merrill was executed on June 19, 1771, I'm pretty sure that is the correct date. Here is some information that I found about the Regulators in 1768: "Separate Baptists at Sandy Creek therefore joined with Quakers to oppose the high tax increases that Governor William Tryon’s government attempted to enforce. Although Shubal Stearns opposed the violence of many Regulators, he sympathized with their beliefs. But many times Regulation protests fell within the boundary of the law. For instance, the Sandy Creek Regulators of Orange and Regulators of Anson, Rowan, Granville and Mecklenburg counties petitioned Governor William Tryon and the North Carolina Assembly in March 1768 and condemned the Eastern gentry for dominating the legislature and condoning courthouse rings in which local sheriffs and other officials dominated. At other times, they criticized Governor Tryon’s attempt to establish the Church of England in North Carolina, as well as building an elaborate palace in New Bern from funds appropriated for the building of "public schools and for purchasing glebes." Sandy Creek Baptist Church was in Orange County, but it could be located in another county today if it's still there.
