I remember a discussion about obtaining records for Confederate soldiers in Union prisons. I am looking for records for an Alexander Valentine who died in the Alton, IL, Prison. Does anyone know how to obtain those records. It is my understanding that he did write a letter asking to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the United States. Thank you, Nancy Moore
I know Clark is one of the 50 most common names in the English language, but just on the slim chance that you might have something... My great-grandfather, Elijah Clark, son of John Clark and Elizabeth McGrew, was vorn in or near Hawesville, KY (Meuhlenburg County), back in the mid-1800s. Do you have anything on this family? Bob Cook, Atlantic Beach, FL I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida
If the name Cazaire is of Irish origin I would suggest that you go to the mail-list shown below for your answers. You subscribe to it in the same way you did this one. Scotch-Irish-L@rootsweb.com Carol
I have JAMES in my line. Benjamin S. HOWARD married Matilda JAMES, then Nancy JAMES. There are also JAMES and HOWARDS mentioned on http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/lig/c/a/captreb/ "Russell D. Bruce, Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner. Rev. THOMSON sounds like an interesting character.Would like to read about his escapades even if his son-in-law Samuel is not related to our BAKERs. Robert BAKER would have been about the right age for our George BAKER's grandfather, though. The CLARK family was close to the Bakers in Mecklenburg Co NC and one of them married a THOMSON girl. Wish we could find the connection if there is one. Bruce, I don't know where the name Cazaire came from. All the Baker researchers I have run across have that as her name. Her dad John MULWEE was born 1744 in Ireland so it may be an Irish or Scottish name. I searched on the computer for meanings of names. The closest name was Casarah , a relatively modern name from the song "Que Sera Sera, whatever will be, will be." Actually it may be a form of Sarah. I know that in the will she was called Rachel so I imagine that was her formal and legal proper name. Could she have been Rachel Cazaire Mulwee ? The name MULWEE is unusual also. I wonder if that name wasn't originally Mc Elwee. So you are a descendant of George Jr.? I don't have any information on him, but have a lot on Jonathan and Tamsen (RODDEN) BAKER'S children 7 some on several other of George and Cazaire's children. Jerry Mullins has a lot of information about Tamsen RODDEN's family also. I'm glad because I have so many irons in the fire working on my SIFFORDs, EDDLEMANs, HELDERMANs and PROFFERs in NC and several other of my family lines. I really like to learn of the maternal ancestors too.Jerry is agreat guy. Better go now. hope I hear from you soon. Vonda CLARK

I am researching my ancestor, Carl (Charles) Seifert, who came to N. C. in 1777 from Berks County, PA. His wife's name was Mary Margaretha (maiden name unknown). He settled in Mecklenburg County(now Cabarrus County) and attended St. John's Lutheran Church. I have found that he had 3 children baptized at New Hanover Lutheran Church but I cannot find where my line (son, Michael, born in 1772) was baptized. I know that Charles had a daughter living with he and his wife in the 1790 census and their names are in the records at St. John's. The daughter's name was Rosina. I have in my possession, tax receipts for George Seifert, Phillip Seifert, Soloman Seifert, Charles Seifert. These receipts date back to the 1778-1845. Also, I have the original will of Charles Seifert's uncle, Gabriel Konig who died in 1767 and is buried at New Hanover Lutheran Church. I would appreciate any help or information anyone could give me. Deane C. Flowers

To the best of anybody's knowledge was there ever a portrait made of Col. George Henry Berger, or any landscapes of his property? His activities in the North Carolina legislature, his Revolutionary War activities, and his apparent wealth cause me to believe he may have been in a position to have a portrait made. If there is a portrait or landscape, have they been reproduced in a book or publication that I can access? Any information would be greatly apprectiated.
